Trouble seating male-female-male-female

Trouble seating male-female-male-female: Posted: Apr 15, 2012 6:45 PM; I'm reading that it's proper to have the table seating (ours are round) male-female-male-female. It's proving to be a little challenging. For example, I have a table where two women are coming together. (not romantically, but they are each other's "dates")
Another table has 3 women that are friends - none of their husbands are coming.
What would you suggest here?
Do people really follow this rule?

Do what works for your guest list. Your guests will appreciate being together and they won't care whether two women are seated next to each other.
