Semi-Destination Wedding and Rehearsal Dinner

Semi-Destination Wedding and Rehearsal Dinner

My family is primarily in Michigan and my fiancee's family is primarily located in Texas (with brothers, uncles, and aunts throughout the US). We are having our wedding in Chicago, where we went to school, and where we used to live. Is this a "destination" wedding? We are having a relatively large reception (200 guests), and paying for the wedding ourselves. Are we required to invite all of the out of towners to the rehearsal dinner? We both are inviting people we work with so it is important not to seem rude (we are both lawyers). Thanks!

No, you don't need to invite all the out of towners to the rehearsal dinner. If you did, it would be like having another reception. You are required, etiquette-wise, to invite the members of the wedding party and their spouses/significant others, parents, siblings and their spouses/SOs. If you know the person performing the ceremony, it is a courtesy to invite him/her and to invite your wedding planner.

If you feel you must do something for closer out of town relatives, you might arrange to meet them for dessert later in the evening.

It's good to find some way to spend time with out of town guests before the wedding, usually, but maybe not if it's sort of a destination wedding. I like Syringa's idea of meeting them for dessert or something after the rehearsal dinner.
