Thank you, rms180. This is what I was trying to say. Then when you factor in issues like blood diamonds, suddenly different types of stones that aren't "traditional" start looking better and better!

If I do get a diamond, I want it to be a Canadian or Australian diamond. A lot of people don't know this, but Canada and Australia are actually 2 of the largest diamond producers in the world(Canada is the 3rd largest globally), and miners there are subject to Canadian and Aussie labour laws (as well as environmental laws!)

Yes I am aware that the only reason diamonds are expensive is due to their ties with the word "love" which anyone would buy if they could.

That being said, just because they aren't rare, doesn't mean they aren't VALUABLE.

Money wise, just because you buy a diamond ring and put it on a finger doesn't mean its lost its value.

I myself have realized that the costs for "mined" diamonds is outrageous, therefore I chose my ring from a diamond manufacturer. DiamondNexusLabs.com. Amazing rings, lifetime warranty, ya my ring is always going to be valuable.

I don't know where people get their info but diamonds go up in value every few years. I was going to sell a stone that passed down to me through famliy and all the paperwork was passed with it. It cost $5000 about 40 years ago and I was offered between $17K and $19K from various dealers.
The key is to invest in a good quality certified diamond and do do your research and pay a good price for the diamond.

I will still give a diamond engagement ring because it is traditional even if diamonds are worth $1 only

For me, whether I was wearing a £10'000 ring or £200 it wouldn't matter as I don't ever plan on selling my engagement ring - it's sentimental value is priceless! x

Thanks for posting this information :)
My boyfriend and I actually talk about this often.
To add to your post, most diamonds are mined in war zones, and people are killed for diamonds every single day.
Personally, I don't need a blood diamond on my hand.

How much you sell a diamond for has almost 100% to do with your sales abilities and your ability to offer it to the right buyer. For the average person, depending on where they buy their diamond, if they were to resell it in the same condition in the open market, they would likely recover only 50-75% of the cost. But that is still way more than 20%.

As for a diamond being worthless, perhaps it would be if the average person could mine, but it's hard work and the success of your mine would depend on your geographical location, which would have to be analyzed by engineers and gemologists, so the costs add up fast too ;-)
