Is it wrong?

I can't wait to marry my best friend. Our wedding will be small with just close family and friends. I am trying to limit the number of guest to under 100. Is it wrong not to invite family that live in the same town, I hardly meet them once or twice a year?

dear Janny,

Your guest list is determined by your budget, your closeness to various people and your personal desire for a small or large wedding.

No, it is not wrong to not invite relatives that you see rarely. If anyone asks, just have your standard reply ready:

"Our guest list is limited to close family and close friends only."

No explanation. No excuses. No embarrassment.

I think that others will agree that the day goes so quick! Spend it with your close friends and family.

When we were making our guestlist, one thing that we looked at was people that we talked to and that were important in our relationship. Yes, there are some people that you HAVE to invite to keep the peace (we had 5), but we wanted it to be a day of fun....not being introduced to people each other barely knew.

We recently went to a wedding of 150. Over 100 were work "must-haves" to the groom. About 75 of them left before the first dance! It missed the mark on being a room filled with all of their close friends and family.

We decided to make the "Must have" list for both the families to keep the peace. As anyone signed up for wedding favors at

Thank you all for your kind advice.

I don't think it is wrong. Probably a good test of whether it is wrong or not is to ask yourself if these physically close, but not personally close relatives invited you to their social gatherings. If they didn't then, they can't complain or at least shouldn't.
