Cake Decoration Help - Using Ribbon

Has anyone used ribbon to decorate their cake? I am having a 4 tier square cake and I like the look of wrapping the ribbon around it - but we are concerned about cutting it. I don't want to make a big mess when we have to remove the ribbon. Has anyone had to do this? Does anyone have any suggestions?

I appreciate any help!

My daughter's cake had ribbon. The exterior was covered in shards of hard, dark chocolate (could be done with white chocolate as well), so there was no concern with the ribbon staining or absorbing fat from buttercream. At the time of the cake cutting, the ribbon simply was snipped with a scissors (by the staff) and the bride and groom made the first cut. Then the cake was whisked away and cut by the staff for serving.

When our daughter was married, she too, had a large layered square cake. Our decorator used wide satin ribbon and tied it into bows using the long streamers to flow downward (not around) the cake. There were maybe 3 of these randomly around the cake, then balanaced with real flowers echoing the bouquets. It was spectacular!

You could always put the seam where the ends of the ribbon meet in the spot where you plan on cutting the cake.
