Can I lose 70 pounds before my wedding date!
Posted: Jan 1, 2010 8:32 PM

I currently weigh 225. I hold my weight well so many people don't realize I am overweight. My wedding date is set for April of 2011. Is it realistic to set a weight loss goal of 70 pounds? And any advice on ways to achieve this goal? Thanks.

ABSOLUTELY! I lost 60 lbs. in one year after gaining a lot of weight on a medication I was on. It took me exactly one year to go from 200 to 140. I lost an average of 2 lbs. a week. It won't be easy, but it is definitely possible. Talk to your family doctor first. Then, you may want to consult with a nutritionist and a personal trainer. I really feel you can do it. If you feel you need extra support, feel free to pm me! Good luck!

Sure, its a realistic goal as long as you dont do any crazy diets. Just stick to the basics of eating right, cuting out processed foods , get into an exercise routine, drink water, and practice portion control. Thats really the best way to lose weight and KEEP it off, because you have to do what you can live with forever. Make it a lifelong goal, not just a wedding day goal, and youll have better success. Ive struggled with weight for the past 15years, and I have a thread/room in this section of the site called Overweight but Inspired. We hold Biggest Loser style contests in there and help support each other, its really fun and really helps. Come over and join us, the next contest will be startingup in a week or two I think, and it really does help you to self motivate. Tell them Kelley sent you over!!! Happy New Year.

Maybe I read this wrong but it seems like you changed your wedding date from 2011 to 2015. I purposely planned my wedding for a year and a half after my engagement just so I could lose weight. Fast forward to now, four months till the wedding, and I haven't lost a pound. In fact I probably gained a bit! Now if you had other reasons for postponing your wedding then thats fine, but I hope it wasn't just for you to lose weight. With that much time I would be afraid you would lose your focus on the reason you were trying to lose weight. If you postponed the wedding till 2015 to lose weight then I suggest you do what the previous posters said, lose the weight for your happiness and health, not for a certain wedding date. Good luck! I am sure you can do it!!

Thanks for your advice. We decided to postpone the wedding for many reasons. Expenses is one of the major reasons. There is still no engagement ring so we are waiting on that before we start creating any final plans. It is a custom ring that I had made and it won't be here until the end of this summer. Plus I am a college student and working a job and all of this and trying to plan a wedding is too much so we are waiting until I finish school also.

I joined LiveStrong.com. It's an incredibly easy to use calorie counter site. You'd be surprised how much of a difference it makes just paying attention to what you're eating. When you have to post it to a site and look at it you (or at least I) tend to want to not be embarrassed by what I'm seeing so I eat better. I've lost 10 pounds in a week and a half. That's not normal, just so you know. Mainly water weight, but even something like that really gets you motivated to keep going.

Also something as simple at trying to keep portions to around 300 calories and eating 5 times a day or around every 3 hours is really helping. I hope that everything works out and if you decide to join the website, which is free by the way, look me up! I'm Melissa Retman and its really nice to have other people in it with you.

I'm with you girl! Our wedding is May 2011 and since we met I've gained over 60 lbs in 5 years! (Stupid college!) So, my honey got me a 2 year gym membership to 24 hour fitness and I'm going to start working out again, to get close to my old self :) I used to be very athletic in high school, and then all of the sudden stopped, and pretty much ate junk food for the past 5 years.

Remember to set a "size loss" goal, like inches or pants sizes, etc. Not a weight-loss goal. Remember that there will be a point if you continue working out that you will not necessarily be losing weight, but you will still be getting smaller. Muscle weighs more than fat! And, like the other gals said, lose weight safely by eating healthy, smaller portions, excercise daily and keep realistic, acheivable goals to kep you from getting discouraged. Good luck and congratulations!

Certainly as long as you REALLY want to! I will swear by weight watchers through and through... I've lost 30lbs on it in just a few months... It's not a diet but a lifestyle change...it really teaches you about what food is "worth" and doesn't keep you from having normal food like everyone else. If you're anything like me, I can't do restrictive diets like no carbs or no sweets etc. I love WW and am back on it now that my wedding is coming up. Planning to loose another 20lbs before November and I know that I can do it. Good luck!

This sounds exactly like myself...after college everything went down hill and I too have gained 50lbs. I also had surgery (well 2 to be honest) in 2007 so that put me on bed rest for several weeks and that was NOT fun. I sort of lost momentum at that point but joined Farrell's and turns out week 7 I had an injury and couldn't finish the 10wk program either...I was doomed I felt. But 2010 HAS to be better, right? I'm getting married Oct. 16th :) I too would like to lose 30-40lbs in somewhat of a short timeframe (9 months)! I wish all of you LUCK!
Be thankful for every minute Kiss

I'm not sure when your wedding date is anymore but even if it is still in 2011 you can lose the 70 lbs but as the first person said it will definitely take some determination. I'm a personal trainer so I see people all the time that get motivated for about a month and then fall off. Here are my suggestions:

Plan on only losing 1-2 lbs. per week, this is an amount that will be healthy for you and will keep the weight off for life....again always make it a healthier lifestyle not just a skinnier you.

Don't bite off more than you can handle, set monthy goals of weight loss and diet/exercise changes. An example, is instead of cutting out all sugar and eating all salads at once make one change per month. Start with adding more vegetable to your diet, then the next month work on cutting out sugar, drinking more water, eating less sodium, etc. As far as exercise, just work on getting to the gym and doing cardio 4-5 days per week first, then work on adding more time and harder workouts as you progress. If you make yourself go for 2 hours 6 days per week in the beginning you'll hate it after 2 weeks.

I highly recommend making some investments in yourself for some nutrition guidance and personal training to learn how to do things properly and keep you from falling for common mistakes/myths.

Don't wiegh yourself everyday, at most weigh yourself on Monday and Friday to see the progress you make during the week and the decline you make in the weekend, it will help you identify your weaknesses.

Don't get discouraged by plateaus, this happens to everyone, these are the times to seek some help or try something new.

Make sure you're snacking healthfully throughout the day, eating too little is just as bad as eating too much. And eat breakfast within in an hour of waking up.

Lastly, don't be afraid of carbs, we need them for energy but try to mix protein with every carbohydrate, i.e. peanut butter on your bananas and apples.

Good luck!

My wedding is in June 2011. I'm attempting to lose 80lbs by then. It's a big goal but, I'm hoping to lose about 2lbs a week on average. I used to be thin so, I know I can get there. It's just hard work! I'm trying to enjoy it rather than stress about it by thinking about how much better I feel.

Hello there,
I am new on here. Just got engaged on Valentines Day! I also need to lose around 70 lbs before I walk down the aisle. I have struggled with my weight all my life but I know if I put my mind to it I can do it. I have done it before and I think my WEDDING is the best motivation ever! I am just looking for some extra support from other brides wanting to lose the weight. I like a challenge so that is what I am kinda looking for on here. Anyone have any good ideas for a Brides Weight loss Challenge?
Always a bridesmaid--Finally a Bride!!
