need help, just starting planning a destination wedding
Posted: Sep 3, 2009 8:22 PM

Hello fellow brides.
I am in the process of planning a destination wedding for May 2010. We would like a beach, all inclusive and adults ONLY resort. WHERE do I begin? Budget, location, wedding costs? I am hitting some bumps and getting stressed. Should I consult a travel agent? What are there costs?
HELP!
Thank you in advance!

Hello,

First off relax, it seems ike a lot but once you narrow down a few basics you'll have a much easier time.

If you already have a date or time of year in mind look into place where the weather will be good then.

Do you have family or friends that you must have there? Take into consideration any restrictions this may place. ie. finances are often a limiting factor. make sure you don't go overboard. I your 'dream' place is expensive look around for some nearby but inexpensive alternatives.

Do you see your self getting married on a beach, in some beautiful old ruins, near a waterfall... etc

All inclusive tend to offer packages that include weddings, however sometimes you can do it nicer and cheaper if you don't stay at an all inclusive. But it is more of a hassle to do it yourself.

For now head down to your local travel agent and ask for some booklets on destination weddings. Heck go to several, see if they have different books.

leaf through some and try to get a feeling for what you want in a DW.
-relax vacation and a wedding in one
-something more focused around the wedding itself.
-an adventure where you happen to get married

check out http://bestdestinationwedding.com/forum/ they have lots of info on different locations.

If you start falling inlove with a location make sure you check their marriage requirements.
Do you need to be there for a few days first? Do you need notorized copies of things such as birth certificates? Do you need to take a blood test?

feel free to ask me any questions, I've been researching a lot lately since both my sister and I are doing DWs

I was in the same position you are in a few months ago! A couple of brides on here mentioned that I should reach out to a travel agent, and one recommended numerous times was Jennifer at VIP Vacations! I have to say, SHE is wonderful and gave me so much piece of mind. With her help and guidance, we decided on Jamaica. Beaches Negril. So far about 4 family members are going and 2 of our friends. We think we will have about 12 rooms but we have plenty of time. A couple of things that we found very helpful was that VIP creates save the date cards, a wedding webpage for our guests to see and she helped us with setting up a payment plan too. www.travelbyvip.com is the travel agents website. Please send me a private message if you have any other questions!
Good luck!
Cool

Hi There and congrats!

DW's are the best route to take, less stress and less $$$. The first thing you need to do is talk to a specialist.. one that will not take any money up front, one that has done a ton of weddings and has traveled extensively to give you honest information. Consider your budget, some resorts are absolutely free, as in the Riu Ocho Rios as long as you book 10 rooms. Others like Dreams have packages to chose from that fit your wedding needs. I would love to help you and the first thing we do is an interview process to find out what you like and what is best for you and your guests.

Love to hear from you,

Cool Have a great day! and Congrats to you

Hi! I'm in the same boat as you... just started (well a couple months ago) planning a destination wedding. First of all, I also wanted an adults-only all-inclusive resort as well. Remember, if you do this you are disinviting friends/family that have kids.. they might feel like they are not welcome.. just a thought. We ended up settling on a resort in Mexico (a chain we have previously stayed at before) that is kid-friendly; we will then go to an adults-only, all-inclusive resort for our honeymoon.

If you still want adults-only but want to stay in the all-inclusive category, some chains I seriously considered were Secrets and Excellence resorts. They have resorts all over (at least all over in Mexico). We chose Mexico because the cost is so much more affordable than asking your friends/family to travel to a more lavish caribbean location (although I would definatley describe the places we are staying at in Mexico as lavish!).

We are having our wedding at the Riu Palace Las Americas and our honeymoon down the road at Secrets Capri, both in Cancun, Mexico. : )
Confidence is intoxicating!

Nancy (who posted above) is my travel agent and I found her on this forum. She's been awesome and I highly recommend talking to her. She's made the planning process so easy!

I also highly recommend Jennifer at VIP Vacations. She is wonderful and a destination wedding bride herself. I saw her wedding on the knot.com !
www.travelbyvip.com is their website!

Good luck!

we handed out our save the dates! I am so excited. WE have at least 10 couples joining us at Sandals Royal Bahamian! Our TA is Jennifer at VIP Vacations and she made us 100 save the dates and we handed them out at our Christmas parties, and family gatherings. I can't wait for the DW!! Now I need lots of advice on flowers, and the guys still need to think about what they are going to wear!
