Cold Sores?
Posted: Jul 19, 2009 8:56 PM

So my wedding is coming up quick, and I was wondering if anyone knew of a prescription to prevent cold sores. I usually get one a year or so, but haven't had one for over a year and a half. I commonly get them when I'm stressed. So I'm dreading the possibility of getting one just before my wedding.

Has anyone had to deal with this problem on or around their wedding? I know abreva helps once you feel one coming on, but I want to prevent it all together!

Help!

Not sure if it works that well, but I've heard Vitamin C tablets, obviously because Vitamin C helps prevent sickness, worth a try right! Also, you said you get them when stressed out, so if you don't have a way to relieve stress, try picking something up that keeps you active, like running or something.

I didn't realize the OP was asking for a prescription. I heard if you take the one that is always advertised on tv, I think Valtrex? Someone was telling me that it helps with mouth cold sores, not sure if just treats them or helps prevent, but I would ask your doctor about that to see if it helps prevent them.

I used to get cold sores all the time. I was in high school, and i just moved, no friends new place, and school just strated. I had them for about a month constantly. Not just one but about 3-5 small one all put together. the doctor told me i had Herpes....i said WTF. i've never even kissed a guy. But it is from stress. He perscribed Valtrex. The meds did not prevent the sores however the day you start to feel it you take the [ills two times a day for three days. And i thought i worked nicely. It didnt get big, and it didnt scab, it pretty much went away.

I HATE cold sores! Hate them. I unfortunately got them. I think alot of people do actually.. Anyways. I don't know how to prevent them I had one like last week or the week before and it sucks. I usually get them when I get really stressed out. So I am hoping that it won't happen before my wedding...

As we grow older, as we continue to change with age, there is one thing that will never change about me, I will keep falling in love with you all over again every single day

Miss-

I get probably 3-5 cold sores a year and typically when I am stressed, sick or I've been in the sun. I talked to the doc and she gave me a script for Valtrex and had me take it twice a day for 3 weeks leading up to the wedding. I've taken it before at the first sign of a sore and they never actually come to fruition. Also, as soon as I feel the tinge I start putting on Abreva. Knock on wood, I've had minimal outbreaks since. Hope this helps!

P.S. I see you're getting married in Hawaii! We honeymooned there! A-MAZING!

Thanks! I do credit the fact that I haven't had one in over a year to better control over stress. The gym has definitely helped in that area. But I know how anxious I can get and then packing and flying! I know the stress will be there no matter what. So hopefully I can do the valtrex thing a couple weeks before my wedding. Fingers crossed!

My boyfriend gets cold sores from time to time. It seems like if he is really stressed out about something he will get a really bad one that lasts for weeks. He bought some Abreva. It seems to help the most when you see the very first signs of one. Other than that it didnt really seem to help if it had already been there. I keep telling him to get the Valtrex. From what I understand it helps to prevent and heal.
Off the subject, your hair is very pretty. Is that natural or do you do something to make it look that way? I have naturally wavy hair but it just seems to frizz out,so I opt for the straightening iron instead. If you have any tips I would love to hear them!!

Thank you! I'm a hairstylist so I have plenty of tips for you! Yes, I have naturally wavy hair, but I use product and a diffuser to get it to look that way. Do you air-dry to use a dryer when you attempt to wear yours wavy? This is what I do; out of the shower I squeeze the excess water out, if you rough it up with your hands or a towel, that's what starts frizz, so just squeeze...then I use Redken 02 Satinwear and Redken 07 Ringlet, mix those together (both creams) and scrunch that through my hair, next I use just a bit of Redken 06 Crystal Curls (gel) and scrunch that through. The gel defines it a bit more and has more hold. Then I flip my head over and diffuse with my Hot Sock diffuser, kind of just cup my hair up and towards the roots. Then I leave it alone! This part is hard for me because I always have my hands through there. But if you fuss with it or rake your fingers through it - frizz.

And for you in Florida? I would invest in a good humidity resistant relaxing serum to fight frizz. Pureology Super Straight Relaxing Serum is awesome! And you wont want to diffuse until dry most likely, probably just enough to get the moisture out. Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray is a good one if you want a "beachy look" but beachy hair usually has a bit of frizz - it can be a good thing!

Sorry I made this so long! Haha! You can also sleep with your hair in "princess leia" buns and take those out in the morning, nice waves that way.
