I've been doing some research, and I don't think that postcards will work, given the invitation style I am using; I'm doing a pocket fold, and the actualy pocket is only 3.5 wide, and I don't think that it will fit the acceptable parameters of a postcard. Although to save money, I am contemplating getting blank 3x5 index cards to use as the RSVP's. Playing around with the idea anyway.

Sybelle - I would have your FH explain that as not everyone from his work is being invited, that you both would really like to mail the invite.

I'm sure the friend will understand. And then you'll have an address for the Thank You note if needed.

SoontobeMrsA - That does sound too small for a postcard, but you might want to look into what different stationary options are available at even Office Depot. I know that they have sheets of different sized cards so you can easily print on them on the computer and then pull them apart - just a suggestion.

But as I mentioned before, a postcard has to be a single sheet, no envelope, irregardless of the size of the envelope. (My friend had a problem with that.)

Dear Sybelle,

"It's ok to hand deliver wedding invititations? "

It's perfectly OK.

Do, however, note that it's still good to get the mailing address. When you write a thank you note for a gift, you'll need to know their address.
