Typically - a reception starts with a Cocktail hour; and then goes into a 4 hour party / celebration including some type of food; dancing; and the other formal dances etc that people do. So in total - a reception is 5 hours including the cocktail hour. But thats just AVERAGE. Plenty of peopel do it differently. It all depends on what your style of party is going to be.

I just went to a wedding this last weekend and theirs started at 1pm, no cocktail hour, well, the bar was open but it was a buffet style appetizer reception. She was planning on having it go until 6 or 7pm.

Mine is starting with a cocktail hour and then a 4 hour reception...so 5 hours total...7 pm to 12 midnight.

Our ceremony is at 6 with the reception to follow (likely around 7).   Probably will go until 11

id say probably 4-6.

My MoH's reception started about 430/5 with the cocktail hour before the wedding party got there and went til about 10.

One of my BMs receptions started at 8/830, went a little past midnight (her wedding started at 630, was about 30-45 min and the reception location was a good 20-30 min drive from the wedding venue).

We had a cocktail hour start at 430, dinner started at 530, dancing started about 645... my parents and ILs and us were the last ones to leave at 11ish.

Mine will be from 6 to 1 am but I'm considering extending it to 2am for an extra fee.

In our culture weddings are huge parties that go all night. They're so much fun, though. We have all kinds of entertainment in our culture.

It also depends on the reception venue. Mine will let us have it for 4 hours, plus set-up time (unless we pay a fee for additional time).
