I have two pugs and I LOVE them. I did do a lot of research first into the temperments of dogs and found some really good websites which is what led me to get my first pug.

Linda Jo, please consider a rescue dog from a shelter or rescue group.  And also please think very carefully about whether or not you reeeeeally want a puppy.

PLEASE PLEASE consider a rescue doggie.

Me either Cry

LJ I found another site for you to check out! Oh and just because these are "breeder" sites, they are just to give you an idea of what the dog is like.  BUT when you go to your local SHELTER (cause that's where ya goin right) you might find a dog that most likely is "mixed" breed (a mut) that will suit your needs.

OH GOD.. I sound like a shelter commercial....lol

we have a full bred shih-tzu and a shih-tzu poodle mix (we think, he was adopted). Anyways....they're kind of small dogs, but have BIG personalities.  My FH loves them.  They still love to play and run around...but also love to cuddle up on the couch or in bed. They're the best of both worlds!!!

Oh and I'm not sure if anyone else suggested this cause I didn't read through the entire thread but www.petfinder.com is a great resource for finding puppies/doggies to adopt.

And since we're sharing some pics...here's a couple of my little love bugs!

My Shih-tzu when he was a puppy

Him playing in the snow (I love this picture)

My Shih-Tzu/Poodle mix....he loves laying in the toy box.  He had recently gotten bit by another dog in our old apt complex, that is why his side is shaved down.

And last but not least, the two of them taking a nap together.  They love eachother (most of the time)! lol

I CAN'T WAIT until Dean and Shane get home so we can go through each and every post from you guys and talk about what to get. Believe me, we will take EVERYTHING you guys say into consideration.

You guys are the BEST! I need more thoughts and pictures for us to view and consider. I, of course, will let you know what we decide on....

I wholeheartedly agree with going to www.petfinder.com and seeing the dogs that are available in your area for adoption. Don't buy from a "breeder" unless you're prepared to go through the necessary steps to find out if they're reputable or not:

Are they in good standing with the AKC and the national breed club?

Have the parents been tested and cleared for all of the health and temperament problems specific to the breed?

Do both parents have either conformation or working titles?

Are litters infrequent and only planned when there are homes already lined up for the puppies?

Does the breeder evaluate interested homes and maintain a waiting list for puppies?

If not, it's a backyard breeder, and you shouldn't give them your money. For a small amount of money, you can get a dog from a rescue that's been fixed, vetted, socialized, and evaluated for temperament, plus you get the satisfaction of giving a homeless pet a family. Many rescues hold adoption days on the weekends at Petsmarts and Petcos; going to one can introduce you to the different dogs and also aquaint you with the rescue staff. Good luck!

I just wanted to say that you're lucky that your DH is ok with a smaller dog...

We're looking at dogs too and my DH wants an English Mastiff. I'm trying to convince him that they are just too big. And now he wants a Great Dane which isnt any better. They're cute..but huge!

LindaJo, good luck finding your perfect match!  :)  I have wanted a boxer for years but always had put it off, because of size, other pets, etc.  Well, FH (at the time) had conceded to a dog in the house, but I was torn.  I cannot stomach a yappy dog.  It has nothing to do with the size of the animal, it seems to be their demeanor to me.  Entirely too needy, lol!  I still wanted a boxer, but was afraid of their size.  I happend to read in the newspaper this spring about a "little boxer".  I called, and went straight over to get her.  She's only 35 pounds, and perfectly behaved.  (she should be somewhere around 50-65 pounds for a normal dog of her breed)

She went into heat two days after we brought her home, so please excuse the silly looking diaper!
