I would definitely prefer to keep it and deal with the cosmetic ugliness but the trunk is really messed up.  I have red duct tape completely covering the edges cuz I'm worried I might park next to a sprinkler or that it rains in the middle of the night. Otherwise, it doesn't look that bad (I'll have to post some pics to prove it).

The damages are up to $3600 and I'm being offered $3400.  I've made a few more phone calls and my insurance people (USAA) said the offer was fair.  That makes me feel better.  I even talked to their loan people and I was approved for a loan at 5.64%.  I'm sure how good that is but I think I remember seeing that my Credit Union was offering a 5% loan awhile back.

Now, I just have to figure out what car to go with!  Everyone's suggestions and personal experience is REALLY helpful as I've been making a list and going to Consumer Reports to read more.  It's good to know that most of the cars you ladies are mentioning are VERY accurate to what the reviews say about them.  Keep the suggestions coming!  I know is NWR but this is incredibly helpful!  Thank you SO, SO, VERY much!  :-)

Oh, I just wanted to add I'm sorry about the accident.  I'm posting again because my FH is a car ho.  lol  He gets Motor Trend Magazine.  They list the top 10 cars based on looks, get up and go, fuel efficiency, etc.  The article was really helpful to me and also made me want to stick with my car.  Funny- FH car is number 1 and mine (well the same brand) is #2.

Please check it out!  http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/sedans/112_0806_four_cylinder_midsize_sedan_comparison/index.html

My DH is a mechanic too uno!! lol. So I hear all about this too. :)

We just bought an 08 Honda Civic, and I absolutely love it! It gets great mileage and it's a car that I'll be using for many years to come. Hondas and Toyotas are excellent cars and last forever! DH had an 88 Honda CRX in high school that got about 30 mpg, even for being about 15 years old! And it had about 200K miles on it at the time as well. But for my Honda, we paid 18K for it.

We looked into a Jetta TDI, and the dealership we went to told us that they're selling them for 25K and up, and we wouldn't have been able to get on the LIST to get one until next year. Crazy!

I have a camery and its cool..there are minor issues with it but im not complaining too much because i just brought it from my sister last yr and all she did was get oil changes on it and at the time i brought it there was almost 140K miles on it!!! but the good thing was that she was just ready for a new car so i only had to pay what she had left on it which was a little more then 6K and at the time it was worth almost 14K (from the online places that the loan folks went to)..oh yeah its an '03.  And my car before last was a '89 camery that my mom gave me...it ran but i had to put power steering fluid and oil in it either when i left a place or when i got there( picture that at the club..lol...and it was my first 2 yrs of college so there was plenty of clubbin going on!) oh and it was a stick (the car i learned to drive stick on) and the 2nd gear was out...so I know all of that sounds a little...well pretty bad just think about the fact that it was a '89 and prior to me driving it it sat for a few years while only being driven like 1ce every two months for the battery....but all of that was minor...the major things were still good.  Also my mom has had toyotas as long as i can remember and they have always been pretty good.

But my main suggestion to you is that if you do get a new car you should consider getting a hybrid.  with gas the way its been that would be the wisest choice.

Also something else to think about if you do keep it is insurance.  In my state (MD) you have to have insurance on your car and with all that its been through it may be hard finding coverage.  But I do know that you only HAVE to have liability but will your current insurance company keep you after they pay it off?

Musaboo-

Thanks for the Motor Trend report.  I haven't been to their site before, as I've mostly looked at Consumer Report.  It's good to have more points of view, especially when it comes to such a large purchase!

Thank you everyone!  You are all helping me more than you know!  :-)

MissMac-

I would LOVE to get a hybrid!  The funny thing is that we thought we would have to replace my FH's truck before my car and when we discussed it, we both wanted to get a Hybrid.  Of course, we thought that would be further in the future when our careers and lives were more established.  Right now, it's just not an affordable option at all.  :-(   Maybe we can still plan on getting one when his truck dies.  :-)

As for insurance, I was told I would only need liability and still be able to drive it as is.  Although a alignment check would be highly suggested due to the way it was hit.

Bummer on the Hybrid deal.  :-(

As you can see, it doesn't LOOK like a Total Loss.

Honestly, if the insurance company is offering you 3400 for it after calling it a total loss, I would jump on it.  Sure, cosmetically speaking it doesn't look too bad, but you most likely did some damge to the frame work on the car, seeing as the back corner panel is caved in and the trunk is stuck open.  If the frame was damaged, there is no fixing it, and least not permanently, or safely.  Also, if the frame is damaged, the car is going to have a salvaged title, wichi means no dealer is going to touch it, since they're so hard to re-sell.  Take the offer!

I drive a chevy suv. My brother is a mechanic...he likes chevys and hondas.  What a bout a Saturn?  Awhile back I was trying to find one the older models...I love that car!  My brother said I would have a hard time finding one...people don't get rid of them.

So sorry about your car!!  Ouch!!  I  would think that it would be hard to trade in??  Have you talked to any mechanics?

I drive a Hyundai Elantra and I LOVE it!!! I have tons of features in my car but did not pay a ton for them. It has so much room! I can fit anything in it. It has great gas milage and Hyundai has the best warranty out there! My DH works for a hyundai dealership so I have driven several different ones (although the one I drive everyday that we own is the elantra) and I have really liked each one fo them.

Sorry to hear about your car!

Sorry to hear about your car, that really stinks!  I would take the loss and go get something new.  I was going to point out 2 things that someone already did.  1) a car in an accident is NEVER the same, believe me 2) the more you put down on a car the better your rate and the better you look.

Right now we share cars, although I've been driving the Ford Focus.  It is an 04 and I like it.  It is small like your cavalier as I'm sure you know.  It is great on gas and it is spacious for being so small, especially that trunk!  We also have a 04 bmw x3, which is a suv.  It is terrible on gas.  It is beautiful both inside and out, but the trunk is small.  We can fit our stroller in there and that's it.  But the rest of the car is very roomy and it is fully loaded which is nice.  But I've been taking the Focus, becuase it fits me better!

Before this I had a Ford Escort, then a Cavalier, then a Mazda Tribute.  The Tribute was my favorite, which is pretty much the same thing as the Ford Escape.  I loved it and once the Focus is paid off, that's what I want again.

Take the offer to get a new car. Trust me, having a leaky trunk SUCKS! My trunk leaks and back in June when we basically had a monsoon my entire car stunk like yucky water. Not fun. Not to mention a leaky trunk might not be the worst thing that you end up with.

Leaky trunk aside, I have a Nissan Altima and I love it. Good luck in your search!

HAVING to buy a car sucks.

In September, I upgraded from an 05 Grand Prix to an 07 Chevy Equinox. I hit a HUGE pothole in my Pontiac and it kept making this clunking noise under the front end that NOBODY could fix and NOBODY could explain what it was. I truly did not want another vehicle because I would have been DONE with payments October of 2009 (4 years total). But my job requires me to travel and I couldn't take the chance of something falling out on the highway. Now I have to start over, ugh.

I really wanted a Tahoe, but the note AND the gas for that is RIDICULOUS!

Aside from the fact that I wont be done with payments until 2012, I really like my vehicle. They say once you get a SUV you'll never want another car and that's true! My Chevy rides well, it comes with satellite radio, which is a lifesaver in those "dead" areas when there's nothing good to listen to. Best of all it takes gas like a car. It takes about $55-$60 to fill up, given that gas is about $3.79/gallon.

Good luck on your car search!
