Hello everyone!

So I went through my shelves yesterday and found a few books I haven't read yet.  So here's my list for your consideration:

Veil of Roses by Laura Fitzgerald.  Here's the review:

From Publishers Weekly
In this pat but sweet attempt at FOB (fresh off the boat) chick lit, Tamila Soroush, a 27-year-old Iranian woman, flies to Tucson, Ariz., to stay with her older sister, Maryam (whom she hasn't seen in 15 years), and Maryam's orthopedic surgeon husband, Ardishir. Tami is there for a three-month stay, courtesy of a visa arranged by her loving parents, who want her to marry an Iranian with American citizenship and stay in the States. Tami concurs with this plan: "being married is a small price to pay if I can stay in the land of Opportunity." But on her way to her ESL class, Tami meets Ike, an affable American working at Starbucks while he raises money to open his own chain of coffee shops. Potential Iranian fiancé setups move forward while Tami and Ike's mutual feelings deepen. As she nears the end of her visa, Tami faces some tough choices. The plot is disposable and the agenda transparent, but watching Tami find her voice through such small comforts as being able to sit alone in a house, walk to school unescorted or buy lingerie with her sister will leave readers rooting for her. The Almost Moon by Alcie Sebold:

From Publishers Weekly
Sebold's disappointing second novel (after much-lauded The Lovely Bones) opens with the narrator's statement that she has killed her mother. Helen Knightly, herself the mother of two daughters and an art class model old enough to be the mother of the students who sketch her nude figure, is the dutiful but resentful caretaker for her senile 88-year-old mother, Clair. One day, traumatized by the stink of Clair's voided bowels and determined to bathe her, Helen succumbs to a life-long dream and smothers Clair, who had sucked the life out of Helen day by day, year by year. After dragging Clair's corpse into the cellar and phoning her ex-husband to confess her crime, Helen has sex with her best friend's 30-year-old blond-god doofus son. Jumping between past and present, Sebold reveals the family's fractured past (insane, agoraphobic mother; tormented father, dead by suicide) and creates a portrait of Clair that resembles Sebold's own mother as portrayed in her memoir, Lucky. While Helen has clearly suffered at her mother's hands, the matricide is woefully contrived, and Helen's handling of the body and her subsequent actions seem almost slapstick. Sebold can write, that's clear, but her sophomore effort is not in line with her talent. (Oct.)

Southern Fried by Cathy Pickens:

From Publishers Weekly
Bodies abound and suspects lurk behind every bush in Pickens's assured debut, a cozy with some sharp edges (kinky sex and some S&M scenes not for the faint of heart). Fired from a prestigious, well-paid job in the big city, lawyer Avery Andrews slinks back home to sleepy Dacus, S.C., where she witnesses a strange spectacle: a grinning skull appears in the rear window of a car as divers raise it from the local lake. Avery begins to practice law in Dacus, and the owner of Garnet Mills, the town's chief employer, wishes to consult her on environmental issues. Then Melvin Bertram, absent from town since his wife's disappearance years earlier, returns and seeks Avery's advice. The car in the lake was his wife's, and he fears the skeleton is hers. Several days later the mill burns down and a charred body is discovered in the ashes. Telling her own story with charm and wry humor, Avery proves a likable and competent sleuth, even while coping with the suicide attempts of a smitten former classmate who "can't live without her." The natives of Dacus and the surrounding hills are convincing Southerners, and little gems of landscape description appear throughout ("The hoop-skirted branches of a magnolia tree, that staunch representative of the indestructible South, sheltered the entire right front yard"). This strong start augurs well for future books in the series.

And last but not least, Angels Fall by Nora Roberts:

From Publishers Weekly
Roberts's latest novel of romantic suspense is a cunningly calibrated portrait of a young chef's recovery from violent trauma. While driving in the Grand Tetons, displaced Bostonian Reece Gilmore stops in the small town of Angel's Fist, near Jackson Hole, Wyo., and considers the "Cook Wanted" sign in Joanie's, a local diner. Still rattled by a shooting spree at her Boston restaurant that left her wounded and the only survivor among 12 co-workers, Reece is easily spooked, as noted by her plainspoken new boss, Joanie, and the locals who frequent the restaurant. Among them is a wary, unattached mystery novelist, Brody. Indeed, when Reece claims to have witnessed a murder while hiking along Snake River, few except Brody are inclined to believe the skittish new resident: Sheriff Rick Mardson hasn't found any clear evidence of a woman struck down near the river; Doc Wallace is suspicious of Reece's fragile mental state; and Joanie isn't about to cut Reece any slack while running a busy kitchen. Roberts cleverly casts suspicions on the locals while developing the romance between the two feisty protagonists. A slow-burn start combusts in a satisfying denouement; Roberts's legions of fans will be enthralled. (July)

I know this is long, but I just wanted to make sure I included what the books are about, that way it makes it easier to decide which one we should choose for our March book.  Any one else want to include a few?  Then we can all take a vote.

Also, I checked and the above books are on Amazon.com for around $2 or less.  (if you buy used.)

I have a lovely trip to the bookstore to report - I took my grandma on Saturday and she chose some Sylvia Browne books and the new Montell Williams book, Healthy Living.

I took a stroll around the romance section, as I am want to do, and was disheartened to realize that there were no books I could remember wanting to read - well a couple, but I looked and they were not there...but then,

I saw the books by Katie MacAllister - I have not read her before, but I have been perusing the CVS book section frequently while waiting on meds the past two months and keep wondering about this story - of course, I found the third book (involving a wedding) in the Aisling Grey, Guardian, Novel  Series - and of course I did not buy it cause I had not seen nor read the first two...

so, I caught a glimpse of the blue cover and looked for the first book in the series - You Slay Me, found it and the next one, Fire Me Up - but I just picked out the first cause they are 8 bucks a piece nowadays. I explained to my grandma about always finding the second or third books, as we were going up to the counter and she said to go get the second one so I could have it ready when I was through with the first and she would get the second one for me...she got them both for me.

A Guardian is a keeper of the gates of hell - I have yet to begin, but there seems to be some very mystical goings on...dragons and such - I know it's gonna be good.

So, I am finishing Three to get Deadly in the Stephanie Plum audiobooks - this one had me crackin' up at my physical therapy appointment, lol, - the ladies were checkin' in on me to make sure I was not going mental while riding the rolling bed behind the curtain - it seems I checked out ok, so they let me go on back to work, lol.

These characters are so fun - I totally see why you are listening to them again ash, and I am only three books in - it's going to be hell when the reader changes and then the voices are all wrong,  CJ Critt does such a fantastic job with them - who else could do the proper Grandma Mazzer???

I am down with whatever book y'all choose - I am just happy to really be back to reading - it's been too long and I get cranky...like having no sex, lol.

I'm alive sort of ashley!  I've been reading my vampire books now forever.  I've been stuck on one for a while because my husband and I have gotten caught in the game, World of Warcraft (don't ask how, don't know).  but I still read during the week at work!

I haven't heard of that author, sorry.  The books do sound good though.  Let me know how they are, and I'll pick one up.  Whatever happened to the next book to read?  :(.  I was looking forward to reading something a little different.

Anyway, I don't have much time.  I have to get ready for work.  We did find a receptionist but I think that she's not going to work out as well as I'd hope.  I'm almost positive that she's going to get fired at the end of the week.  I'll try to update my blog if that happens!  I hope all is well with you, Ashley, and anybody else that may happen upon this.  Have a great day!

I'm so happy to see this back to the front page!!  For a while there I thought I was the only one left responding to this thing!

Ashley, you'll have to let me know how those books are.  They sound really great!

I'm sad to say that I haven't been able to read much.  We're still getting ready for our move, so I've been trying to clean out junk drawers and do some light packing.  It's amazing how much crap 2 people can accumulate over a 2 year time period!!

I've been trying to pick up my book here and there, but I'm still reading the same book I was reading a month ago!  That never happens to me!  I just want 1 weekend where I can sit on my arse and read.

So are we starting a new book for our club or what?  That would def get my butt into gear!

Later chicas.

AHH!  I am so excited to see this thread! I love reading so much and love to recommend books. My new favorite author is Jodi Picoult and I have read almost all  her books in the past year.  My favorites are My Sister's Keeper, 19 Minutes and The Pact.  Have any of you read her books?  They are kind of like courtroom drama/ lifetime movies (for the subject matter, not the cheeziness factor ;-)) I just got her new book which came out last week and cant wait to get into it.

I just read Divine Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood which I loved.  I cant wait to read Little Altars Everywhere, which is what the movie is based on.

lol I could go on forever.  Anyone else a Jodi Picoult fan?

Sue - how are things going with the whole job front??? Did your FH find something there yet and what about you??? have you found anything yet????

Belle - I actually have one jodi p. book but i am not sure which one it is...or even where it is since my bookshelf is now over flowing and stacked 3 rows deep but when i get to that section i will tell you....

so i read The Prey and it was fantastic..it was heart wrenching, thrilling, great sex scenes and amazingly suspensful and it def has a crazy ending so i will recommend it to you all i am about to start the next one which is The Hunt and they are by Allison Brennan (i am almost positive that thats the way you spell it) so go on out and pick that up...

as far as a new book club book well lets start it up...im sure it will only be a couple of us doing it but i dont think that matters much..i will try to get a hold of lily to see if shes interested although after i sent her that mad rush of audio books (which she is still going through lol) i dont know if she will want to fit another in right now...

alright its great to see all you wormies again and welcome to diana (i think)

I haven't read any jodi p books, but My Sisters Keeper looks like a great read.  I'm planning on checking it out in my near future!

Ash, I haven't found a thing yet.  We're STILL not sure where we're moving to.  I'm starting to get nervous since my last day here is April 18!  Bit I guess there have been a few ppl from different companies inquiring about FH, it's not from the city I want to move to (Portland) but I like Eugene too, so it's not that bad I guess.

He's almost finished with his last house in the developement he's been working on over here, so he's going to head over to Eugene and talk to some ppl after he's finished up next week.

Is lilly still having computer problems?  I haven't seen her around in a while.

Definitely check out My Sister's Keeper before it is made into a movie.  Cameron Diaz and Dakota and Elle Fanning will be starring in it...I think it is being filmed now.  And I have a feeling it will be a disappointment to the book aficionados.

Ashley - the job is going fairly well.  I'm getting some good experience out of it and the people aren't bad either.  not to mention, any money I make goes into our savings :).  I'm still in the middle of my stupid book because we've been playing instead of me reading!  I'm ready to start a new book once this one is over.  let me know what you choose.

I'd sit and type longer except I have to ready for work, and I;'m moving slow this morning from being tired.  have a great day you guys!
