The best reception you've gone to and why?
Posted: Dec 18, 2007 8:55 AM

My fiance and I are trying to come up with ideas for fun things to do at our reception. More than anything else, we really want our guests to have a good time. We've come up with some ideas so far, but I just wanted to run it past this board to brainstorm a little bit.

What was the most fun reception you've ever attended? What made it fun?

I'd really appreciate any and all input!

Thanks!

Honestly, the best receptions I've been to have been mainly because the bride and groom were radiating happiness and were having a great time.  They weren't rushing around trying to talk to every guest, they were just on the dance floor and were glowing.  Also, the receptions where you don't have to stop 20 times to do things like the bouquet toss, then go back to dancing, then the garter toss, then go back to dancing, then sit down for toasts, dance, sit down for cake... you get the picture.  Too many interruptions, and a bad flow of events.  Even though the father/daughter dance and mother/son dance are important to you, realize that guests may not want to sit through 20 minutes of dancing... the best receptions I've been to have combined the two dances.

GOOD FOOD is a must.  And my personal favorite for a good reception is good music.  I love oldies and a lot of others do as well, so just really fun and good music.

The BEST receptions I have been to have been all of the above I mentioned, and then a live band.  I actually went to a wedding where they had dueling pianos, it was so much fun, and another had an incredible live band.  However this can be more pricey, but we did this and cut out other things and everyone raved, they still are and it's almost half a year later.

I second everything that Beachwed said.  However,  on a limited budget, I think a full (and open) bar is more important than good food.  Food is so personal, and it's hard to satisfy multiple pallettes.  Although multiple food stations can rectify that problem.

Very true, I was re-thinking that while I'm bored here at work Tongue out  That'd be another thing, food stations are great and can please everyone (and they are a TON TON TON less work for you, you don't have to figure out who gets what and sort out the response cards) and the alcohol is a bit more important.  Like someone else said, you don't even have to have top shelf stuff, just free beer and free wine or something like that.  And I also second the not making your guests wait around for hours while you get pictures taken, if they have to wait, have appetizers and a room for them to be in.

most fun at a wedding was the one where there was lots of dancing! make sure reception has a great area for dancing and you choose a DJ/Band that does the old classic songs and hits from the 80's to get everyone on the dance floor. I love seeing young children dance i love circles being formed and people taking turns to dance in the center! all fun! I like humerous speeches - they can still be heartfelt but a joke or two never goes astray....i also love a great atmosphere at a wedding, like table decorations or fairy lights etc it adds to the ambience. Also a great start to a reception and is what my sister did and EVERYONE WAS CHEERING AND RAVING ABOUT IT AFTERWARDS WAS at reception, the DJ announced the bridal party men first, they walked into the reception to the song 'bad boys' with sunglasses on and everyone cheered, then it was the bridesmaids turn and we walked or danced in :) to the song 'pretty woman' then the wedding couple came in to a very popular song in australia at the time 'love is in the air' by Paul Young.  It was a fun start to the reception!

This sounds like so much fun we were planning on doing this except we hadnt decided on songs but i think bad boys will be perfect for the groomsman because my fh and his friends have always had an obsesion with it, they even have the ringtone... lol

I agree with everything that has been mentioned. To me what makes a wedding reception good is an open bar and good music. Some of the best weddings I have been to have been where everyone was up dancing and having a good time. Usually a live band is the best way to go for that. Unfortunately the room we chose for our reception is too small for a band so we need to have a dj. You just need to make sure you cater to your guests when it comes to music. Yes I like Pop and FH likes Rock but we have a mostly older crowd so we need to play music that they will like. Also make sure you are up dancing. That will get people up and dance too. Recruit you bms to dance too.
