Ladies!! I need help on my proposal idea!
Posted: Jan 16, 2007 12:42 AM

Hi ladies, my name is Tom and I'm from the UK but living in Toronto. Back in '05 I met my wonderful girl (and hopefully future wife!) here and I've stayed ever since. I want to propose to her this Saturday as we've been talking about the future for the past few months and we believe absolutely we've found love and happiness together. My family is Scots Irish and I'll be taking my gorgeous lady to a Robbie Burns' Dinner (Scotland's most famous poet from the 18th century) at a beautiful old hall in Toronto with a pipe band, huge open fireplace, I'll be in my kilt and full Highland regalia; the lot! My idea is to ask the chairman of the dinner if I can read one of Robbie Burns famous love poems (My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose) and then I'll get on one knee and ask her to marry me in front of everyone. Does this sound ok ladies?? I'd really appreciate your advice as I want it to be a surprise and I'm getting nervous - I don't want to embarass her too much!! Thanks for any responses - Tommy

Tommy, first off.. we love it when future Grooms and grooms come on this site! So please update us on how it went AFTER you do this. Secondly,  your idea is AWESOME. I love it because it sounds like it  is SO YOU. It is your personality, culture, everything all thrown into a proposal. Whether or not she will be really embarassed depends on her personality. She will probably be fine... just shocked.. but if she is the type who is shy or gets embarrassed easily, maybe see if you can get a more private area in the restaurant with less people around you? Although I think it would be soooo cool to do that in a restaurant and then you know everyone will start clapping afterwards etc. Also, give your waiter or someone that will be standing there when it happens a camera, so  you can have the moment captured on fim forever.

This is so beautiful and romantic! She will love it.

Hey thanks ladies! That means a lot to me and it's really helping to set my mind at ease. You know the feeling I have right now - I've made up my mind and I can't wait to pop the question Surprised

My girlfriend is not really the shy type - she's pretty vivacious and confident, so hopefully she won't be too overcome by the attention. I'm the one that's prone to blushing (and with a ton of butterflies in my stomach) but she's my world and I'd do anything to show her how amazing she is to me. Thanks for the confidence booster, I'll keep you updated!

Tommy,

If youre the one who gets shy or has butterflies, it might be a good idea to write out exactly what you want to say (if youre saying anything other than Will you marry me that is...) This way you can leave the poem itself along with whatever you want to say with the waiter or manager or whoever. Then when its time, he can come over and give that to you. Sometimes it helps if you dont have to worry about having to REMEMBER what you want to say especially when youre really nervous! And GET PICTURES! My husand proposed to me under the rockefeller center Xmas tree at night...and it was AMAZING...but we have no pictures of it because he didnt think to bring a camera or have someone there with a camera... and I really wish we had pictures of that moment.:) Give it to the waiter or someone else who knows this is happening so you dont have to worry about it... GOOD LUCK this will be so sweet! Cant wait to hear about it.

Hey Tommy,

I think what you're doing is so beautiful! I would just like to add to what Kelley said, it would be cool if after reading the poem that you write what you would like to say on the same sheet of paper and say something on the lines of: I also would like to say........... That way, it won't look out of place with the waiter or manager giving you a piece of paper to read. Good Luck and I hope that you're able to get pictures or get it video taped without suspicion. I'm sure that you will do great, we will be here rooting for you!

Well....tomorrow night is the night! And I feel ok actually, I'm sure I'll be a tiny bit nervous in 24 hours tho Surprised
Luckily I got a promotion at work a couple of weeks ago, so I've been very busy and haven't had much time to dwell on this. But don't get me wrong - I have planned this moment for some time. During the week my girlfriend's Mum sent me an email as she has an idea what's going on (I'm a traditional guy in that respect and wanted to speak to her parents before I went ahead, out of respect) and she wrote that I would be her "dream son-in-law" which I was really touched by; she's v excited by this! I picked up my kilt last night - and I will be careful when I get down on one knee wearing it ha ha Wink

Well....................... LaughingLaughingLaughing
Here's the scoop - yesterday (Sat 20th January) I met Laura downtown; the day was very cold with small banks of snow around the streets, but with beautiful blue skies and sunshine. I took her to the cafe where we had had our first date, Everest Cafe on Queen West (which serves Himalayan food) and we had lunch. I should point out here that I recently invested in a digital video camera, so I caught the whole day on tape for eternity, which you'll see. I told Laura I was making a documentary for my family, tee hee. Then I broke the news that I'd booked a lovely room at the Old Mill Inn where the Burns Supper was being held. Later, we gathered our things and headed for the glens - or West Toronto!
We took our time getting ready in a truly fantastic room (we were delighted by our home for the night) and I had the full regalia - kilt, sporran, Bonnie Prince Charlie jacket and waistcoat with silver square buttons, hose, flashes, sgian dubh, kilt pin and Gillie brogues. Laura was wearing her lovely custom made dress that you saw in the photos recently. We went down to the dinner (in this hall http://www.oldmilltoronto.com/photos/BruleRoom1.html ) and the 48th Highlanders piped in, there was the Selkirk Grace, a wonderful Ode to the Haggis and then the toast to the Immortal Memory..... During dinner I spotted the chap who recites the poems and songs, a distinguished, tall gent I remembered from last year with a silver beard, and it turns out he's a Minister called Malcolm Sinclair, a Canadian-Scot (he offered to marry us down the road, before I'd even asked Laura. I told him that first thing's first!). When he went off to the bathroom I hurriedly followed and caught him in the hallway. I explained my idea, that I wanted to read The Red, Red Rose and then propose to my beautiful girlfriend. "What a splendid idea!", he remarked and we hatched a plan that he would, as is customary, sing the first verse and then..... well here's what happened 20 mins later!
Malcolm is on stage in front of the 400 guests, he begins to sing the love poem. After the first verse he stops abruptly and then says, "This really needs the voice of a younger man, a man with young love in his heart, so I'd like to invite my friend Tom Quinn up here to do this..." I'm filming all this and I pass the camera to Laura who is of course very perplexed as she was thinking there must be another Tom Quinn in the audience. Up I get, legs not quite jelly, and recite the final two verses. I thank Malcolm for the opportunity, explain that my Mother was born in St Andrew's, Scotland and that I'm only English by accident (to get the crowd on my side of course!) and that I've been here since Sept '05 and I have a very important question to ask my beautiful girlfriend, Laura......... Gasps from the ladies in the audience! I hand the mic back to Malcolm and make my way down towards Laura to much thumping of tables and clanging of glasses, who now is really wondering what's going on. SurprisedEmbarassedSurprised
One of the ladies on our table had helpfully guessed and taken the camera from her! Reaching into my trusty sporran, I bring out the ring as the tension mounts around the hall, and getting down on one knee (and now on the big screens at either side of the stage which they used to film the evening) I explain to Laura how much I love her (which she knows) and would she please marry me (which she had only just guessed!)? To my almighty relief she answered with an emphatic YES!, before jumping in the air and we hugged and kissed before eventually putting the ring on her finger, to the applause of the other 400 guests. T'was truly a magical moment which we'll never forget and I'm delighted that the organisers of the Burns' Supper were game for the idea. As George Peppard says in the The A-Team, "I love it when a plan comes together!" My greatest fear was that I would embarass Laura and make her feel uncomfortable. She was certainly shocked and shaking, but after a while she seems blissfully happy and so am I. Well let's face it, my poor mind and body can't be doing THAT every week!LaughingLaughingLaughing
