Yes, the mini-dress is the 60's--mid thigh was about the length. See if you can find pics of Cindy Crawford's beach wedding. She wore a little lace mini. I've seen some on various designers' sites on the Knot's dress finder--you just have to search. Just don't do Britney Spear's no underwear look (lol!)

When my Dad and Stepmom got married (13 years ago) she wore a mini dress and a little veil like you described. It was a backyard wedding and she looked adorable! =)  Keep in mind this was in the 90's so the style isn't what you are looking for nor is the hairstyle! =) I covered her face, because I'm not sure she would want me to post a pic of her on this forum! hehe =)

in response to cakies: my wedding is in l.a., on the rooftop of a downtown penthouse.  it will be an evening event, and late summer/ early fall.  i guess you can say we are leaning towards a 'hip' type of event.

That sounds like a fun atmosphere, perfect for your mini dress. Do you have a pic of your FMIL in her dress?

seacat76 I think a mini dress is awesome.  I like brides that have a different style and not the typical boring a-line strapless type.  I have seen a beautiful mini dress from Cymbeline it's called Somalie, you could wear it with a little veil and be totally hip and tendy.  Some of the responses you got were so rude, some brides are so boring that they want to slam someone who has creativity.  I also don't like how people associate dress length with formality.  You can wear a knee length dress and have a chapel wedding if you want to and it can be formal, no on can tell you how to do your wedding.  Good luck with the dress search, I think you will look awesome!

my cousin got married on a cruise ship and wore a leather mini dress.  It was very cute and tastefull.  I don't have a pic to post, but it was a creamy white with pearl straps.  There was also a short jacket almost like a ballero style.  I think it is a great idea so go for it.  If you have trouble finding one in a store try looking at some patterns.  As long as you don't have lots of intricate beading or sequence having a dress like that made isn't going to cost as much as a traditional gown would.

thank you so much HOTPINKBRIDE!! i simply adore the dresses you have shown me!  (Yes, they do exisit!) especially the Romona Kevesa!!  i am totally for something new and different.  i feel the same as you do about the strapless ball gown/a-line/cream puff routine. of the last half dozen weddings i went to, everyone was wearing the same boring old whipped cream skirt, and strapless, with an 'updo'.  i couldn't even tell the difference between the brides!  that look is 'nice', it's just not for me.

definatly check out Romona Keveza's latest collection. She has some super cute mini dresses in it! She is doing a lot of 2 peice gowns so that you can wear a long skirt to the ceremony and a mini to the reception! I love that idea! I also love the idea of a little dress - just because your getting married doesn't mean you have to drown yourself in fabric!! If I didn't hate my legs I would definatly wear one!!

Hi Seacat,

I think some people really have the wrong idea regarding what you are looking for...to the point they are being rude.

I have seen some really cute short dresses. The two I am considering are Watters and Watters 9047b and another one from Alfred Angelo that has a hi-low hem...i don't like the picture on the website...but it looks great on. Good luck!

Viva the short dress....maybe we just have better legs!

This is the Marchesa dress Sienna Miller wore to a party for the designer.  It's gorgeous, I am thinking about having it custom made for me!  Here's the link to see it:
