We are having about 160 guests and we are spending about $450 on the cake. It really just depends on what kind of detail you want on your cake. Ours is very modern and simple. Also, shape and layout of the cake matters.

Your best bet is to call Publix and see what they charge.  My baker charges by the serving.  I don't know is grocery stores do the same or not.

It all depends on what you want, and who's doing the baking.  Simply designed and buttercream frosted cakes are usually much cheaper than, say, fondant.  Ours is intricate stenciled designs in fondant with fresh roses on it, and the total price is $700 for 150 servings.  That also includes the rental deposit and fee for the posts that go in to support it, plus the delivery and setup costs.

This cake is the inspiration for ours:

I paid $325 for my cake which fed 175 people and was buttercream with a little design. This was from a bakery.

Ours is $.85 a serving.  That includes the baker cutting the cake(cause I was the first on to put my deposit down), any stairs or fountains or pedestals that would be used.

The cost of your cake will vary. I found a local bakery that has a basic 3 tier cake starting at 250. If your really thinking about a supermarket- Super Walmarts may have cakes starting at 150. silver white only; they can design it anyway you want. I dont think they will do something to extravagent.

We ordered from Publix. I got a two tier cake (12" x 8") with fresh strawberry filling to feed 50-65 people for $125. Ours was under groom's cakes and it was the This One's For You! cake. I would really recommend Publix because their cakes are so inexpensive and all the people there were so nice. Plus, you only have to order your cake a month in advance.

Most bakeries here in Las Vegas are charging about $10 per slice. I think $300 for a cake that feeds 30 people is outrageous and I will keep looking for something less expensive.

We got a small Vegas cake for our DW that was a budget cake, about 6.00 per slice.   Our baker back home just about choked when she heard what we paid for it!   She is charging $2.00 per for our reception, with the free top tier factored in.

I'm also going to go with Publix and while I haven't worked out the details yet, we are going to be feeding 60 or so people for$125-$150.  From what I have seen so far, I wouldhighly recommend Publix.  The guy (kid) I was dealing with was so strait forward and easy to work with.  The prices are incredible, and the taste is divine.  I went in to buy a single peice of cake and the kid - who I had talked to the day before, told me they were free since I am buying a cake.  I knew what kind I wanted, but he forced me to take extra pieces just because I could.  Yummmy!  He also was no salesman and I loved that.  He told me that "that fondue crap or whatever you call it" tasted aweful and it was just for looks.  He also said that almost 1/2 the people won't eat cake, so why bother spending way too much?  I liked that he was so honest with me.
