But I want a short dress!
I don't know if anyone here can relate, but I am REALLY confused about my whole dress situation. I have tried on quite a few dresses, looked through web sites and magazines, asked friends and family which designers they like... I just hate long dresses. They look great on every other bride, but when I wear one, I just feel like I'm drowning in white. Every time I go dress shopping, I'm pulled away from the wedding dresses to the prom and bridesmaid dresses, with their cute little details and higher hem lines.
But a few months ago my fiance was looking at one of my bridal magazines and he saw a short dress being advertised and ripped onto the idea. Normally if he doesn't like something I want I just make him deal with it. But our pictures will last forever and I don't want to look at our albums seeing him upset over my dress lenght. I even told him I really wanted a short dress, and he's not budging. He just doesn't think that short dresses belong on the aisle.
I had the same dress problem for prom, but prom was simpler, considering I always had the dress before the date. I just don't know what to do. I can't get excited about these long dresses. and when I try one on, I hate it! But if I wore a shorter dress, he'd hate it. Anyone have adivce? This is starting to get depressing.

Re: But I want a short dress!
Would he maybe consider a tea length dress? Would you be okay with a tea length? They fall mid-calf, so it's not short and it doesn't seem like he would have an issue with it, and they're not to long either. If you really want to please him by not going too short for what he wants, maybe a simpler long dress that hangs closer to the body instead of a-line would make you feel less like you're swimming in a sea of white. Either way, remember this: it is your wedding too. He should have a say in his tux or whatever he's wearing, maybe even wear something you don't like and you should wear what you want, not what you don't like. I doubt he'd love you less if you wore a short dress. If he loved you less for something like that, he doesn't deserve you.

Re: But I want a short dress!
I agree that it should be your choice for a wedding dress and he should have a say in the tux....but if u want to compromise u could maybe look into having a shorter hemline at the front which goes down at the back? (does that make sense) there's a cute one I quite like.... I think it's called Trudie or something.

Re: But I want a short dress!
Hmm... I don't think I elaborated enough. When I said short, I meant super short. Like it's best to avoid bending short. But I never thought of tea lenght. That's a good idea. Maybe tea lenght fit and flare? Hmm... I just have a hard time finding any clothes at all. I'm 5' 2" so I'm too tall to be petite but I'm too short to be average. I've never owned a long dress, even the form-fitting ones tend to overpower me.
And I'm picking his tux. Honestly, I just let him have a say in the dress because he's not really giving me input in anything else. He's not lazy, I just feel like I'm more creative about this kind of thing, and we both hate normal or boring. So I'm making final decisions, this just became a big deal because of how he is about involvement.

Re: But I want a short dress!
remember too that you're going to have to pay to get it hemmed. I know i'm on the shorter side and was definitely feeling overwhelmed when trying on dresses because there was just SO much fabric that was going to have to co me off the bottom.
This is like the one the previous poster was talking aout where it's a tad shorter in the front than in the back.

or maybe this one?

or maybe you would feel better in something just alltogether less volumous?

those are just a few I pulled from the brides.com dress search. I put the sillouette on "sheath" and was picking things with less "bridal" detail and not so much fluff on it. hehe
Good luck!

Re: But I want a short dress!
It's easy to get carried away in choosing certain items, but I would like to draw your attention to the fact that these will be your forever after photo's. You don't want to be 40 and look back and think, oh why did I have to go that short?! Your wedding should reflect who you are, but also be classic, so you won't look back and cringe.
Perhaps you think that long dresses aren't sexy enough? If I may make a suggestion, you're quite short, I think almost the same length as Christina Aguilera. She had this gorgeous gown on which was tight fitting yet sexy, and then changed into this cute short number for the reception.
What about something like that ... where you both get best of both worlds (i.e. he get the long and you get the short)?!
Cherish all your happy moments: they make a fine cushion for old age.

Re: But I want a short dress!
Have you considdered Amsale's Little White Dress collection? It's adroable and at the same time fun and a little fashion forward. She designs amazing wedding dresses, so these short dresses are perfect if you are looking for something on the shorter side. They usually site a few inches above the knee but you could always have them shortened more if you wanted. Maybe your hubby would go for something like this since they are in face wedding dresses intentionally designed to be short? Anyway, good luck!!

Re: But I want a short dress!
Hey thanks guys this really helped. I like the short in front, long in back style. Those are really pretty. I'll probably get a short dress for the rehersal dinner and for on the honeymoon. I could just go to thrift stores for those.

Re: But I want a short dress!
I think the idea of a long dress for the ceremony and a short dress for the reception is a great compromise, you could probably find both at an inexpensive price maybe at a trunk show off the rack kind of deal. Even if you didn't want 2 dresses the tea-length or the ones that are shorter in the front with the longer back could work as a compromise. I have to agree with your FH that a REALLY short dress might seem inappropriate walking down the asile, but that is simply an opinion. You also have to remember the dresses you are trying on aren't hemmed to your height, when they are they won't seem to over-whelming. My dress is a Casablanca and the designer custom made the dress to my measurements for free, I don't know if other designers do this but I imagine some will, then you don't have to worry about the cost. You could also consider a different color like champagne instead of white, maybe that will make you feel a little less consumed as well. Just ideas being thrown out there.

Re: But I want a short dress!
My dress was like the first pic that Nala posted. I loved that dress. I didn't feel all white, poofy and overly girly girl - which is NOT me!
I found mine on ebay from a personal owner. It was hand sewn - very well hand made, but not all the beading. It was perfect!
We made a bolero jacket to go with, as I always feel like I have big upper arms and didn't want them to show.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, cheesecake in one hand, rum in the other, body totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!

Re: But I want a short dress!
First of all, you are the bride and you will be wearing the dress. If you love short dresses then be sure to explain this to your fiance. You want to look and feel beautiful on your wedding day - because it is your day. Once you put on your dress and look gorgeous, your fiance will hopefully realise how silly he had been.
Second, short dresses are all the rage right now. Top designers are even creating lines of wedding dresses in addition to wedding gowns, because they are so pretty and so unique. A short dress can add pizazz and style to any wedding. My favorite line of short dresses is from Amsale. They have a line called the Little White Dress and the dresses are just fabulous and would look just as amazing going down the aisle as a long gown.
For more information on Amsale's line of short bridal dresses take a look at my blog entry:
