For these women, wedding dresses carry the tale of the big day

April Massaro

As a former bridal stylist for designers Vera Wang and Romona Keveza, April Massaro knew long before becoming engaged to Jonathan Larken what she’d wear at her wedding. Her custom-made dress was inspired by a Christian Lacroix gown she’d seen in a museum as a girl. Longtime friend Nelson D’Leon, known for couture headpieces and veils and for styling in-the-know New York City brides, was among the first to find out that April was engaged. When he explained that he was already booked for the date she’d chosen for her Fenwick, CT, wedding, she promptly chose another one.

On the big day, D’Leon spent more than three hours on April’s hair and makeup. He added false eyelashes, used a hairpiece to create the perfect updo, placed a diamond tiara that belonged to Jonathan’s late grandmother on her head and topped it off with a silk tulle veil. "I thought I would be so nervous before the wedding," April says. "But when Nelson was done, I felt incredibly comfortable and confident."
