- Question:
- My fiancee and I live a thousand miles from where I grew up. My mother insists that weddings should always be held in the bride's hometown. I think it might be too tough. How can we plan it from so far away?
- Answer:
While couples traditionally married in the bride's town of origin, these days it's just as common for them to tie the knot somewhere else--in the groom's hometown, the city the couple currently calls home or even an exotic locale for a romantic getaway wedding. When you're deciding where to say "I do," consider the logistics--for you and your guests. For instance, if the majority of your guests still live in your hometown, it will be easier to have the celebration there, even if it's a little tougher on you. There are ways to make planning across the miles easier. Hire a wedding consultant, who will discuss your wedding vision with you, then do the local legwork to find the best people and places to make it happen. You may only need to make one or two trips to meet with vendors and confirm her choices. If you'd like to be more hands-on in your planning, give yourself a long engagement and piggyback trips home for the holidays with wedding-planning marathons. (And if your mom, sis or best friend can help you scout out good candidates ahead of time, even better.) Try to keep your wedding simple--choose a site that comes with a caterer, book a band.
