Does My Cathedral-Length Veil Have to Be Carried by Pages?

cathedral length bridal veil

Photo: Meredith Hanafi Photography

When you're planning your wedding, you're sure to have a lot of questions about finding the right wedding gown, bridal veil, bridesmaid dresses, mother-of-the bride attire, and more. That's why our etiquette experts are here to answer all of your fashion-related questions.

I would love to wear a cathedral-length veil for my wedding, but does it really have to be carried by pages? Can't I simply let it trail behind me?

You don't need a crew to carry your veil. Just be sure to have someone—your maid of honor, dad, or wedding consultant—arrange it behind you before you head down the aisle. To ensure that your veil doesn't get dirty, have an aisle runner put in place before the processional.

How to Choose the Right Wedding Veil for Your Look

how-to-choose-your-veil.jpg

Photo: Corbin Gurkin

Nothing makes for a more dramatic entrance than a bride walking in wearing a veil. "A veil highlights a bride's appearance when walking down the aisle," says Stephanie Caravella, Associate Vice President at Bel Aire Bridal. "It can also enhance the wedding dress by complementing the beading or embroidery on the gown." But the decision isn't as simple as "to veil or not to veil." Different types of veils and lengths can completely transform your wedding style. While a blusher may convey a retro-chic vibe, a cathedral-length veil feels traditional and so dramatic. To help decide the style that's right for your wedding, we asked Caravella to break down the options.

Blusher. Going for a less traditional look with vintage appeal? "A blusher is a short veil (usually 30" in length) that falls over the face and ends near the top of the dress," says Caravella. "During the ceremony, it's pulled back to reveal the bride, which makes for an exciting and moving moment—the first time the groom sees his bride's face."

Elbow. If you want a more conservative look for your ceremony, an elbow-length veil is an elegant way to cover-up without wearing a bulky bolero or shrug. "An elbow veil (usually 32" in length) falls gracefully over the shoulders to the bride's—you guessed it—elbow," says Caravella.

Fingertip. "A fingertip veil (usually 38-40" in length) falls beyond the bride's hips and is a popular choice because it allows any design on the back of a bride's gown to be seen through the sheer fabric," says Caravella. And with all of the gorgeous, detailed-back wedding dresses spotted on the runway this season, who wouldn't want to show off that angle?

Waltz. There's no rule that says you need to take off your veil for the reception. But if you do choose to keep it on, make sure it won't get the in the way of dancing and mingling. "A waltz veil (usually 60" in length) falls to the mid-calf and is a great option for those who want to wear a longer veil for the reception, but still want the freedom to move throughout the evening."

Floor. "A floor-length veil (usually 72" in length) just grazes the floor and matches the length of the bride's gown," says Caravella. The flowing fabric will add extra volume to your look, perfect for a bride who was torn between a ball gown and more streamlined silhouette.

Chapel. Opting to forgo a train? A chapel-length veil will create the illusion of a train, without any pesky bustling required. "A chapel-length veil (usually 90" in length) sweeps across the floor extending slightly beyond the bride's gown," says Caravella.

Cathedral. For the most regal entrance, you must have a cathedral-length veil. "A cathedral-length veil (usually 108"-120" in length) extends beyond the train of the bride's gown and is the most dramatic down-the-aisle length."

Before you decide on your perfect veil length, you should also consider your hairstyle. If you're thinking of wearing your hair down in loose romantic waves, a veil will probably look best pinned to top of your head. For a pretty (and easy!) finish to an updo, try a tiara or headband, says Caravella. And no matter what, don't forget to bring your hair accessories to your trial so that your stylist can create the perfect 'do.

The Best Shoes for Your Wedding Dress Silhouette

davids-bridal-wedding-shoe-shopping-tips.jpg Photo: Courtesy of David's Bridal

Your wedding shoe is the ultimate place to play on your big day and the perfect opportunity to combine your wedding style and your personal style. But, like anything else, there are a few important things you should consider before you go off wearing dangerously studded spiked heels with an all-too-easy to rip lace gown.

"The shoe you choose for your wedding day should reflect your personal style, wedding décor and coordinate with your dress and wedding colors. But they also need to be comfortable," says David's Bridal Shoe Merchant Cathy Gegeckas. "Don't buy a shoe that isn't comfy when you initially try it on. After five-plus hours of standing in it, it won't be any more comfortable." Once you've determined your comfort level (and pain threshold), think about your gown's silhouette. As much as you might want to wear that six-inch hot pink pump, if you've bought a ball gown, it's going to be lost in tulle. To help avert other shoe snafus, Gegeckas shared a few shoe selection tips for every style of wedding gown.

Sheath or column. "Sheath, column or mermaid gowns tend to focus on your curves, so you have the opportunity to wear a sexy strappy high heel sandal or embellished peep toe." We love the ladylike bows on the backs of these satin White by Vera Wang sandals.

Short or Tea Length. "Short or tea-length gowns are a great opportunity to show off your individual shoe style!" says Gegeckas. "If you're more daring, try a print or color. If your style is a little more retro, look for a pointy toe pump or pair of kitten heels with coordinating accessories like short gloves or a fascinator." The cute, retro-inspired pumps above are just $49.50!

A-line or ballgown. "A voluminous skirt on an A-line or ballgown might mean your shoes won't be visible to your guests, but you can still wear something that is extra special to you. If your gown has lace detail or pearls, you may want to incorporate that look into your shoes." Try this lovely lace pair above (which, by the way, are only $59.50!).

Good advice for any gown: Nix a skinny heel for a beach or outdoor affair, and consider a change of shoe. "Buy yourself a second pair of shoes to change into at the reception," says Gegeckas. "After dancing the night away, you'll be thankful to change into a pair of comfy flip flops.

How to Preserve Your Wedding Veil—and Why You Should!

wedding dress and veil preservation tips

Photo: Karen Hill Photography

Nothing completes your dream wedding dress like a gorgeous veil. "Without the veil, the bride is simply a beautiful girl in a beautiful gown," says Stephanie Caravella, Associate Vice President at Bel Aire Bridal. "The history of the veil is important as well—many who lived in Ancient Greece and Rome believed that a veil kept evil spirits away from the bride."

Whether you believe a veil is a good luck charm or just a beautiful addition to your bridal look, you should make every attempt to preserve it. And to insure no one ends up with a torn, burnt, or yellowed headpiece, we consulted with Jennifer Judd, co-owner of Heritage Garment Preservation, one of the nation's top heirloom garment preservationists. (Look at the amazing work they did on the vintage 45 year-old veil below—it looks like new!).

45-year-old veil before and after restoration

Photo: Courtesy of Heritage Garment Preservation

The first thing we learned: You should preserve your veil (and dress) as soon as possible. "If not cleaned and stored correctly, it discolors and weakens over time," says Judd. Heritage, like most other preservationists, often preserve the veil and gown together. The service costs $250-400, depending on the gown's fabric and intricacy of its embellishments.

To preserve your gown and veil, you can either store it in an archival safe acid- and lignin-free box and tissue or hang your items in a 100% cotton bag. "The hanging method allows the gown and veil fabric to breath, reducing the risk of yellowing, permanent creases, and mold that are commonly found in sealed box preserved gowns/veils," Judd says. If you do decide to go the boxed route, "It is very important to use acid- and lignin-free tissue and boxes," Judd says. "Some paper materials contain acid and this, over time, can damage fabric and veil material."

If you're more of a DIY girl (and don't want to spend a couple hundred dollars), you can clean and store your veil yourself. The less embellished your veil, the easier it will be to safely preserve at home. If your veil is very dirty, Judd suggests using a mild detergent in a sink, rinsing your veil well, and hanging it to dry. If needed, you can also use a very low temperature iron to press the veil. Finish by wrapping your keepsake in acid- and lignin-free tissue and placing it in an archival box or bag purchased from a company who specializes in restoring garments. (Heritage's do-it-yourself preservation kits cost around $100.)

But the most important aspect of preservation is where you store your garments. "If you put it up in the attic, down in a basement, or out in the garage, it will damage the veil over time," Judd says. "The best place to store it is in a climate controlled area (like under a bed or hanging in a closet) to insure it will last for generations to come."
