Train Talks "Marry Me"!

Train-2-250.jpg

Pat Monahan, the lead singer of Train, spills aobut love, matrimony, and why he always cries at weddings. Thinking about Train's "Marry Me" for your first dance? You could win a custom video greeting from the band to play at your wedding!

Q: What's the story behind "Marry Me"? It's the perfect first-dance song.
A: My wife, Amber. The very first time we sat and had coffee, in Seattle, I felt as if I could ask her to marry me in that second and not ever regret it. So I thought, Wouldn't that have been really romantic if that had really been the case? It just takes that moment to feel that that's the right person. Love at first sight is real. The cliches of life exist because there is some truth to all of them.

Q: So what happened when you finally did propose?
A: I'd always dreamed of meeting the girl of my dreams and having a beautiful proposal. And here I was at 35, and I had never been able to do that. I took Amber to look at a diamond. Then the guy slipped me a piece of paper to tell me how much it was. When we left, I said, "Honey, I can't get it. It's just too much." Then later on that day, I called him and said, "Make the ring." When I was asked to go to London to write songs for Tina Turner, I was like, "Why don't we go to Portofino, [Italy,] too?" I had the ring with me, and going through security, I was sweating, worried they'd ask me about it. I had asked her before if she would marry me even if all I had was a twisty-tie ring. She'd always said yes. So in Italy, when we went for a hike, I pulled out a twisty-tie and put it on her finger. She thought it was funny. Then I got down on my knee and opened up the real ring and just started bawling, asking her to marry me because I was so much better with her. Then she started to cry. We cried for an hour.

Q: What did you choose for your first dance?
A: I wrote a song for Amber years ago called "Beautiful Marvelous." So we danced to the demo tape of me singing really sharp and a friend of mine playing piano.

Q: What was your favorite part of your wedding?
A: It rained that day. I kind of love that it did, because we had to move inside, and everything got more intimate. We wrote our own vows, and there were a lot of people who came up to us and said, "That was the most magical wedding we've ever been to." And you know what, it was for us, too.

Q: What do you love about weddings in general?
A: I'm like a girl when it comes to watching the bride walk down the aisle. It's so show-business. You can't see her, and all of a sudden there she is. I get really emotional.
