Old Navy's $1 Flip Flop Sale
Coming June 30

flip flop wedding favors

On June 30, Old Navy will offer its colorful rubber flip flops for the unbeatably low price of $1 a pair. (Standard pairs normally sell for $3.94 or $5 for two.) Although more typical of a pool deck than a dance floor, we love the idea of giving your wedding guests a break from their high heels by leaving a basket of flip flops by the door—just be sure to bring a few friends when you go shopping, because each customer is limited to five pairs per sale.

How to Score Free Plane Tickets
to Australia

free_ticket_to_australia.jpg

Photo: Courtesy of Park Hyatt Sydney

Let's face it: Scoring a frequent-flier award ticket at a reasonable mileage rate is about as difficult as learning calculus (at least for me, anyway). I'm still amazed by my good friend Brian Kelly, aka "The Points Guy," who knows the tricks of every airline or credit card loyalty program, and has scored seriously fab freebies—like the time he flew to the Seychelles for free and ended up sitting next to Madonna.

For our May issue, we profiled Australia, a honeymoon destination that is fabulous, but can be quite pricey to fly to. Not to fear, says Brian: With advance notice you can score free seats. Here's how.

1. Turn credit card points into miles. Roundtrip awards to Australia are hefty, starting at 72K-100K for coach and 125K-150K for business, based upon availability and capacity control, so you'll likely need to top up those frequent flier accounts. "I like both the American Express Membership Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards programs because they allow you to transfer points to a number of airlines, at one point to one mile, which is a great rate," says Kelly.

2. Study airline partners and alliances. "American doesn't fly from the US to Australia, but, Qantas, their partner and Australia's national carrier does," explains Kelly. "Just redeem those American miles on Qantas. And though United and Delta fly to Sydney, it's worth checking out their respective partners, Air Canada and V Australia. They could have better availability."

3. Always book over the phone (yes, even though there's that annoying surcharge). "You can't trust what you see on an airline website—they're notorious for not showing partner award tickets—so you've got to call for the real scoop on seats," says Kelly. And be super-friendly. "These agents hear from angry people 24/7. Explain that this is for your honeymoon! I've found that a little kindness goes a long way."

To celebrate one of our favorite online shopping sites kick off the one-year anniversary of their Wedding Boutique, we're participating in the very exciting 'Fashion Your Big Day Contest' taking place on what else: Pinterest! The fab women's apparel and accessories (and bridal!) online retailer recently gathered together fashion and wedding experts, as well as brides-to-be known for their impeccable style, to guest edit inspiration boards on Pinterest.

Our very own Digital Director and all-things-wedding extraordinaire Lisa Gooder was asked to step into the judges circle. Lisa used 'The Urban Bride' as her inspiration, pulling a gorgeous Badgley Mischka number that's drapey and modern with a fantastic broach at the shoulder. You'll love the Anya Hindmarch sparkly clutch she picked too, "It's something you'll wear on your wedding day and many times afterward," Lisa notes. And we can't forget the adorable Indah white bikini she threw in because, according to the stylista herself, "Nothing says 'just married' like a white bikini on your honeymoon."

How do YOU participate you ask? Let us tell you:

1. Follow Shopbop.com and their Pinterest boards to check out the stunning inspiration from model Chrissy Teigen, designer Tori Praver (of Tori Praver Swimwear), Style Me Pretty's Abby Larson, Shopbop's bride-to-be Jane Albiter, and our very own, Lisa Gooder.

2. Create your own wedding-inspired Pinterest board using three unique products from Shopbop's Wedding Boutique (Don't forget to name your board "Wedding Inspiration from Shopbop.com.")

3. Email weddingcontest@shopbop.com (Include "Wedding Boutique Contest Entry" as well as the URL link to your Pinterest board.)

Not only does this marry our love of all things bridal with our online shopping obsession, but did we mention the grand prize? You could win one of three Shopbop gift certificates weighing in at $2,500, $5,000 and a whopping $10,000. The contest ends April 30th, so run don't walk over to Shopbop and get pinning! And while you're there check out the Brides boards that cover everything from finding your wedding hairstyle to DIY details to the current coverage of Bridal Fashion Week here in NYC. Enjoy!

Win a Dream Italian Honeymoon

florence-honeymoon-giveaway.jpg

Photo: Jacqueline Gifford

Our April issue profiles the top destinations, hotels, and resorts around the world, ranked by the A-list agents at Virtuoso. (I'm still crushing on our cover, btw, which was shot at one of the resorts that made the list. Guess which one. Hint: It's in Mexico.) I'm always amazed to see who wins an award. This year was a mix of trendy (the chic, mod Setai in Miami, where Beyonce and Jay-Z stay) and the classic (seaside Le Sirenuse in Positano, Italy, where Reese Witherspoon stayed last summer). The best part of the feature? Brides and Virtuoso are giving away a honeymoon of a lifetime: 4 nights at the posh St. Regis Rome, 3 nights at the brand-new St. Regis Florence, airfare for two courtesy of Lufthansa, a consultation with a Virtuoso honeymoon insider, plus $3,000 cash. The grand prize total is over $15,000 people!

A Complimentary Night at The Emerson Resort, Spa & Restaurant

emerson-resort-weddings-1.jpg

Photos: Via Kiwi Collection

Starting today through June 30, couples who mention BRIDES or Brides.com when booking their wedding with The Emerson Resort, Spa & Restaurant will receive one night in a complimentary room. Great deal, right? And you haven't even heard about the resort yet.

Situated on a 19th-century dairy farm in Ralph Waldo Emerson's beloved Hudson Valley, The Emerson boasts 53 rooms and suites, a new spa facility, two restaurants, a coffee bar, and a cornucopia of nearby activities. Choose from the adults-only suites in the Inn—featuring oversized windows and private decks with views of the property—and the family-oriented accommodations of the log-built Lodge nestled among New York State pines and maples.

For indoor weddings, the Catamount Restaurant and the Great Room both offer space for up to 150 people, although we'd opt for the latter's floor-to-ceiling windows and huge stone fireplace. If it's an outdoor affair you're after, the Waterside Pavilion features a backdrop of the mountains and the Esopus River—a perfect panorama, we'd say.

Snag a $59 Wedding Gown
from The Limited

Flyaway.jpg

Photo: Courtesy of The Limited

The phrase "final sale" can be met with a bit of trepidation, especially once you realize your soon-to-be snagged deal is nonreturnable under any condition. Be not afraid, however, of the current red tag mark downs happening over at The Limited, where their entire wedding collection is up to 60 percent off.

Fifteen of the brand's current styles are on final sale for less than $99, with some as low as $59, including this strappy silk chiffon beauty. Shorter styles, like this delicately bejeweled party dress, would make for a cuter-than-cute reception dress.

With the entire wedding gown collection on major clearance, we can't help but wonder if we'll even see another long white gown from The Limited again. No official word yet as to whether or not the brand is getting out of bridal.

Meanwhile, if you've already scored your dream wedding gown, the deal of the century can still be had. Consider this pale peach one-shoulder stunner for your bridesmaids. The color is on-trend and the price can't be beat.

Put Away Your Running Shoes: Filene's Basement to Close

filenes-basement-closing-running-of-the-brides.jpg

Photos: Courtesy of Filene's Basement

Yesterday brought the news that the iconic, 102-year-old discount chain Filene's Basement will liquidate and close its doors. I know, I thought it, too: "No more Running of the Brides?!" Syms Corp., who owns the brand, filed for bankruptcy in Delaware, making this the third time that Filene's has entered into bankruptcy. All 46 locations will offer going-out-of-business sales through January—and if you've been to a Running of the Brides event before, you'll know that a Filene's sale is the retail equivalent of warfare. Bring a buddy (or a whole team of them), wear your most supportive shoes, and get ready to sweat. You might not unearth an off-price bridal gown on the liquidation rack, but I guarantee you'll score a few looks for showers and parties. Gilt's Wedding Shop Hosted by Colin Cowie

colin-cowie-gilt-bridal.jpg

Tomorrow starting at noon, Gilt Groupe will feature its semi-annual bridal sale with up to 60 percent off items ranging from wedding gowns to party dresses to Gilt City deals to gifts. Curating the site's offerings this year is famed event planner Colin Cowie, who recently sat down with Gilt's editorial director (and recent bride) Melissa Liebling-Goldberg to dish out a little of his expert planning advice:

Melissa: What are the five things that you should always splurge on for a wedding?
Colin: Beautiful invitations, stunning flowers, delicious food, tasty cocktails, and fabulous music.

Melissa: What are the five things you shouldn't feel bad about saving on?
Colin: 1) Instead of expensive imported champagne, think of a sparkling wine or well-crafted cocktail; 2) Instead of a large orchestra or live band have a great DJ. Todays DJ's are tomorrow's rock stars; 3) Instead of a cocktail hour, have your pictures taken prior to the wedding and then proceed directly from the ceremony to the reception; 4) Forget the party favors or tchotchkes—instead upgrade the chicken stuffed with a-la-something to a succulent rack of lamb; 5) Instead of serving dessert followed by wedding cake, make your wedding cake the dessert feature.

Melissa: What's the secret to pulling together a chic wedding on a short timeline of three months or less?
Colin: As long as you can confirm the venue and officiate of your choice, you can very easily plan a wedding in 3 months or less. Think about it, even though the average length of engagement is 12-18 months, most of the work is done in the last 3 months.

Melissa: What is your favorite recommendation for a bridesmaid gift? Favors?
Colin: Anything personalized that becomes a keepsake. If it is embroidered, foil stamped or engraved, a personal gift goes a long way. From bathrobes, to make-up bags, silver jewelry cases or personal stationery, you can't go wrong.

This All-Inclusive Honeymoon
Offers Beach-Time and Adventure

safari-camp-deal-all-inclusive.jpg Photos: Courtesy of Selous Safari Company

For some people, "all-inclusive" may be a dirty word, but I think the appeal of an all-inclusive getaway is hard to deny: unlimited food, drink, and activities, with no wallet-carrying required. In our recent roundup of all-inclusive beach hotels, we included Ras Kutani, a beautiful boutique resort perched on a stretch of white sand beach in Tanzania. Ras Kutani is owned by the Selous Safari Company, which also runs two all-inclusive safari camps in Tanzania, the Selous Safari Camp and Jongomero Camp, making it easy to combine a beach vacation with a safari adventure for the best of both worlds. And until December 15, tour operator Africa Odyssey is offering an all-inclusive nine-night safari-and-beach experience that includes three nights at the Selous Safari Camp, three nights at Jongomero Camp, and three nights at Ras Kutani. The package, which includes accommodations, food, drink, activities, and internal flights, costs $5,862 per person (a savings of $1,831).
