Ron Ben-Israel Bakes a Cake to Celebrate the New Issue of Brides

The offices at Condé Nast were all abuzz today as Brides unveiled our new May cover! To celebrate, our friend Ron Ben-Israel of Ron Ben Israel Cakes whipped up a masterpiece creation complete with a life-like pair pearl studded Christian Louboutins, atop of shoe boxes from the likes of Carolina Herrera, Alexander McQueen's Snake Skin Knuckle Box Clutch, even a sparkly engagement ring, all resting on stacks of the brand-new May issue.

Dotting the creation was the May cover's featured flower: a Magnolia Blossom. It's simply stunning and was hard to imagine digging a fork into...until we were told what was inside: alternating vanilla and chocolate cake with Grand Marnier raspberry and dulce de leche buttercream.

Get the scoop on the beautiful changes to the new May issue of Brides.

Sophie Dahl's Must-Have Registry Items (And How You Can Win Her New Cookbook!)

The stunning model-turned-author (and granddaughter of beloved author Roald Dahl), Sophie Dahl, debuts her second cookbook, Very Fond of Food: A Year in Recipes, in the May issue of Brides. You can win one of twenty signed copies of the stylish collection of simple and seasonal recipes by visiting our registry page. Good luck!

We asked the recent bride (Dahl married musician Jamie Cullum back in 2010) to share her top registry picks with us:

Nouvel Studio Twist Glasses, $24 each. "These remind me of what you'd be sipping lemonade out of while floating around your garden wearing broderie anglaise"

Shun Reserve Meat Cleaver, $180. " I think everyone should have one of these-anything in the kitchen that seems scary is actually quite fun."

Johnson Bro. "Desert Rose" Dinnerware, $120., "My grandmother, who I've written about often, had china that was similar to this."

Baby Chicken, from $55. "I'm actually scared of birds, but the idea is to have fresh eggs and raise chickens-in reality it would be me running in my nightie flapping around."

For more brilliant registry ideas and from Sophie Dahl, be sure to pick up the May issue of Brides (pg. 174) on newsstands everywhere April 24th. And head over to your nearest bookstore to pick up Very Fond of Food, or find it online.

BRIDES' March 2012 Cover

Both fluid and formfitting at the same time, Lazaro's beaded and embroidered mermaid gown gave our March cover an easy, girlie aesthetic. Since the dress already had a bit of bling, we toned down the accessories with an Haute Bride Swarovski elements hair comb, Kwiat diamond and platinum studs and a Fred Leighton diamond ring. LMD Floral created a sweet soft pink bouquet of French anemones and senecio foliage.

Think this is the dress for you? Our Dressing Room allows you to virtually try it on, along with tons of other beautiful dresses featured in the magazine. Don't forget to complete the look by trying on the perfect virtual hairstyle in our Beauty Salon, too!

BRIDES 'Love Truck' Parks
in Times Square

brides-lovetruck-times-square.jpg

In celebration of yesterday's lovefest, BRIDES parked its "Love Truck" in the heart of New York City and invited all of Times Square to step inside to declare their love on brides.com. For five hours, visitors and Valentines alike shared stories and lessons of love via livestream while enjoying cups of hot chocolate and winning diamond jewelry from jcpenney. (And what's not to love about diamond jewelry?)

Meanwhile, outside the truck, a sea of couples from around the world participated in an annual mass "Renewal of the Vows" ceremony, which, if you missed it, you can watch back here.

Favorite Finds From the NY Gift Fair

It's that time of the year! Every January and August, nearly 3,000 companies descend on the New York International Gift Fair to show off their latest goods. And as magazine editors, we spend six days walking miles of vendor booths (we're on day three and already feeling the burn) in order to scope out what will fill future issues of BRIDES, as well store shelves near you next season for home, office, primping, accessorizing, and general gifting (think wedding favors, big-day looks, bridesmaids' gifts, and decor ideas). Check out what we're loving so far this show, and come back daily for our latest obsessions, hot off the convention-center floor:

Kobo Candle & Potted Plant
Lots of brides look for guest favors that won't end up in the garbage after the night is over. Eco-conscious brides, or anyone looking to give the favors a second life, should look no further. Kobo introduces candles that transform into repottable plants—Somerset thyme, Siam poppy, sweet sunflower. It's the perfect favor for doing double duty.

Cose-Nuove-Gift-Fair.jpg

Cose Nuove Swedish Dish Cloths
Not only are these dish cloths both absorbent and reusable, but they also come in a multitude of patterns that will match any color scheme and brighten even the dullest of kitchens. Say goodbye to smelly sponges and rolls of paper towels, and hello to the newest trend in kitchen cleaning.

Yellow-Owl-Workshop-Gift-Fair.jpg

Yellow Owl Workshop Stamp Sets
As a huge DIY fan, I was completely head over heels for Yellow Owl Workshop's stamps. Novice crafters will appreciate having all the tools necessary to make their own creations—invitations, escort cards, save-the-dates—while those with more experience have the option to personalize their design and colors.

Bellocq-Gift-Fair.jpg

Bellocq Tea Assortments
Bridesmaids—or even a stressed out bride-to-be—will love a box of Bellocq's tea samplings. Choose from eight packaged loose teas in flavors such as Majorelle Mint, Bellocq Breakfast, and The Queen's Guard, which come in the signature bright yellow box.

Monte Durham's
Say Yes Style Secrets

Say-Yes-to-the-Dress-Monte-Durham.jpg

Photo: Courtesy of TLC

Each week, Monte Durham of TLC's Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta helps guide women through the wedding-dress-shopping experience. We picked his brain about whom brides should take to the wedding salon—and what they should do if their posse suddenly goes mental.

Whom should you bring when you go dress-shopping?
Monte: Every girl wants her mom there. And it's best to bring at least one person who shares your vision. If things are going astray, I take the person who seems to center the bride—could be the mom, could be the sister—and let them have a moment together to reevaluate.

What if the people who are supposed to be there to help the bride start heckling her instead?
Let's say you invite five people—sister, mother, two friends, and a cousin—and tell them to tell you exactly what they think. Let the cameras roll, because they're going to tell you exactly what they think. Sometimes they do it just to be mean: "You're going to wear that? Don't you remember your prom?" We once had a mom saying really hurtful things about the bride's stomach—keep in mind the bride was a cheerleader! I can tell a girl that she looks incredible all I want, but at the end of the day, she's going to listen to her mom.

How do you handle that?
I take charge of the appointment and say, "Guess what—only one person is speaking, and it's not you!" Sometimes I just take the bride aside and tell her it's time to go home, because that's the only thing that will get her mind clear.

BRIDES' February 2012 Cover

BRIDES-February-2012-Cover-Look.jpg

We wanted our February bride's look to be natural and effortless—with a dash of extra polish for her big day. The loose chignon and glowing, rosy cheeks are the beauty looks of the moment and complement the soft, fluid White by Vera Wang satin-faced organza A-line gown with a black horsehair sash. As per our usual M.O., jewelry was kept restrained, this time with Forevermark's delicate 18-karat-white-gold diamond drop earrings. But our bride isn't all pretty and no pop—we love the bright red bouquet of garden roses, anemones, ranunculus, geranium leaf, and jasmine by LMD, Lewis Miller Design.

For our January cover, we wanted to ring in a new year with a fresh look, and Carolina Herrera's stunner, with its embroidered black-and-white floral motif, was the head-turner we were searching for. To keep all eyes on the dress, the BRIDES fashion team outfitted our cover girl with beautiful and understated diamond earrings and a ring from H.Stern. The soft pink bouquet by Zezé Flowers made up of roses, hydrangeas, dahlias, and Japanese cucurmas complements the flower at the gown's waist.

Behind The Scenes of
Next Great Baker

Back in August, Buddy "Cake Boss" Valastro and his crew invaded the BRIDES office to film a challenge—which aired last night—for his hit TLC show Next Great Baker. Here's a quick recap if you missed the episode: The contestants were split into three teams, each of which had to create a wedding cake inspired by an assigned theme: "vintage romance," "princess," or "Hollywood glam." The winning team's creation would be featured in BRIDES.

In the end, Buddy and his guest judge, BRIDES fashion editor Terrie Collymore, chose the gorgeous "vintage romance" confection created by Chad Fitzgerald, Heather Grubb, Ryan Cimorelli, and Marissa Lopez. Be sure to pick up our January issue to see the winning cake, and keep tuning in on Mondays at 9 p.m. to find out who wins the grand prize: his or her own feature in an upcoming issue!

Also, check out the exclusive video above to see what actually went down when Buddy and the bakers took over our digs.—Jennifer Cress
