Love the idea of a soft, romantic wavy hairstyle on your wedding day? We found 14 looks just for you—whether you want to pin your ringlets back, let your curls loose, or just try something different. In search of tips for how to tame a curly mane, we spoke with John D., a celebrity stylist for TRESemmé.

To get your curls under control, John D. suggests going with a sleek 'do. "Think: a ponytail, braid, chignon, knot, twists. This look may have an almost wet look. There will be lots of shine. There will be no crazy texture. The style would be smooth, precise. This style choice will get that curly hair under control." And if you're looking for a romantic look, why not embrace a romantic, retro-inspired wavy hairstyle? "Retro curls are a great way to go if you want the body and fullness of your waves but you need to keep them reigned in."

Now that you've got the scoop on wedding-day hair from TRESemmé, it's time get inspired with some gorgeous curly-girl wedding hairstyles.

5 Expert Tips for Perfect
Wedding Day Hair

5 Tips for Perfect Wedding Day HairPhoto: W. Scott Chester Photography

Though the winner of Brides Live Wedding will have nothing to worry about when it comes to her wedding day hair (she'll have a team of TRESemmé stylists at the ready!), there is still plenty you can do to make sure your tresses look perfect when you say "I do." To get the skinny on prepping for the most important "good hair day" of your life, we asked TRESemmé stylist John D.—the same hair guru who has worked on Selena Gomez's glossy strands—for his top tips. Whether you're going for something classic, like an elegant chignon topped with a gorgeous vintage broach, or an edgier style (think, gorgeous boho braid), you'll want a timeless look that will last from day-to-night, but more importantly, makes you feel as beautiful as you are.

1. Be selfish. "Ask yourself, 'What hairstyles look the best on me?'" says John D. "Think of your favorite hairstyles that you've worn over the years. Choose that one that makes you feel comfortable, confident, and cool. Your wedding day can be filled with stress, anxiety, and mounds of details—the last thing you want to worry about is your hair."

2. Don't rule anything out. "When it comes to choosing the perfect wedding 'do there are so many options to consider," says John D. Just because you always wear your super-curly hair in a high bun doesn't mean soft finger waves are off the table. "No matter what your hair texture is, whether it's curly, loose and body waved, or pin straight—or any combo of any of these textures—the perfect style for your big day is possible because you're bringing experts on board," says John D.

3. Create a visual. "Once you've chosen a couple of inspired styles, it's time to make an inspiration board. Pull ideas from your favorite magazines, online blogs, and Pinterest. Even if you're not entirely sure which look you love most, an image can give your hairstylist loads of info about what it is you may be looking for," says John D.

4. Piece it together. You don't have to produce one, perfect look for your stylist to recreate—and where's the fun in that? "Say you're stuck between a beautiful down style and a lovely updo. By bringing in both of the images, your stylist will be able to incorporate your favorite aspects from each and ultimately turn them into one, fully-customized look," says John D.

5. Remember, practice makes perfect. "It is essential you make an appointment with your hairstylist for the ever-important wedding hair test run," says John D. And remember to follow the two previous tips and be prepared. "Not you (nor your hairstylist) will want to try 15 completely different looks. Be specific, have a direction, collaborate, and let the stylist give it a go. A couple of minor adjustments may be needed to tweak the style, but the test run is the best way to feel good about what you have in mind for the big day." And if possible, bring your bridal veil or hair accessory along. This is the perfect time to figure out exactly where and how to fasten the piece, says John D.

Wedding Hairstyles for Straight Hair

Photo: Closer to Love

We get it, smooth strands need love, too. That's why we found these wedding hairstyles that are absolutely ideal for brides with straight hair. We reached out to Tyler Laswell, a TRESemmé stylist, to give us a few must-know tips before you (or your stylist) attempt the biggest hairdo of your life. "Go to the salon and get a clear gloss treatment the day before your wedding," Laswell suggests. "It will make your hair so shiny and healthy looking, everyone will think that you just stepped out of a hair commercial." To keep your flyaways at bay, Laswell suggests a shiny wax pomade. "It keeps them in check much better than a stiff hairspray."

Now that you've got the inside scoop from TRESemmé, it's time get inspired with some gorgeous wedding hairstyles.

20+ Romantic Wedding Hairstyles for Traditional Brides

Must-See Wedding Hairstyles with Veils

Photo: Tim Will Photography

Before you even begin to contemplate your wedding-day hairstyle you must ask yourself: To veil or not to veil? Thankfully, according to TRESemmé celebrity stylist Jeanie Syfu, your dreamy bridal 'do and that traditional wedding headpiece are not mutually exclusive.

"My tip for bridal hair with veils is to keep it simple," Syfu says. Her recommendation? "A beautiful blow-out or soft waves with some hair pulled back to open up the face." If you're all about the updo, Syfu suggests brides opt for a chignon or bun. Placement is key though: "I would recommend below the crown or just at the nape or side," she says. The hair guru begs brides to be aware that "veils are dramatic and you really don't want you hair to be too busy with a lot of detailing and tendrils."

Boho bride Alex made a statement with her braided wedding hairstyle. She gathered her hair into a high ponytail and proceeded to loosely braid it, leaving pieces out here and there. We've learned a thing or two about bridal style over the years, and one thing we know for sure is a wedding hairstyle can certainly make an entire look. This was the case for Sarah's braided updo, which was finished with a white feathery hair accessory.

Pulling back her shiny brunette locks allowed us to see her true wedding-glow, along with her gorgeous Monique Lhuillier lace wedding dress. Her backyard wedding had a pretty peach theme and took place at her family's property as the sun ducked under the southern sky.

Finding a Wedding Hairstyle That's You—Just a little More Glam

Wavy Down Wedding Hairstyle Idea

Photo: Bèla Adler & Salvador Fresneda

What do real brides have to say about the wedding planning experience? Well, it's not all happy tears at the bridal boutique and indulgent cake tastings. Guest blogger Jennifer Castoro shares the pros and cons of "the first look," the perks of letting your bridesmaids take over, and more.

When I started planning my wedding in the spring of this year, I may not have had a clear idea of the details—location, time of year, really anything other than the man (a crucial element!). But I did have a pretty clear image in my mind of the way I'd look as I walked down the aisle. I pictured my long, formerly-thick-but-now-kinda-not, wavy-frizzy hair perfectly thick and glossy, in loose, romantic curls, and my makeup soft and pretty. Basically like a cross between Jessica Simpson (the Nick Lachey wedding version) and Snow White—an angelic vision of brideliness. Or something.

In an effort to make at least part of that image come to pass, I've been growing out my hair. For a very long time. (Guys, meet my split ends.) It's getting a bit gross, actually, and I can't wait to chop an inch or two off before the big day—it's the longest it's ever been in my entire life, and it's annoying. I'm not going to lie to you and say that I'm super low-maintenance and that this messy pouf hasn't bothered me, because I'm not, and it does. But it's worth a few months of messy buns and umpteen bottles of split-end-repair cream if it means it looks good at the wedding.

Like I mentioned, I have a clear vision of what I want: to look glowing and gorgeous and all the other things that every bride wants to be when she sees her almost-husband waiting at the end of the aisle. But the more I think about it, the more my original idea of loose waves and soft makeup seems too much like everyday me. I do like my normal, low-maintenance look (obviously, or I wouldn't do it!), but I don't want the main difference between Monday-morning Jen and here-comes-the-bride Jen to be a white dress. It's my wedding day—I want to look gorgeous! And radiant! (And slimmer, but I don't think my makeup artist has a concealer for that.) Plus, I've scoured the interwebs for wedding hairstyle ideas and talked with countless stylists for a reason: I want their expertise. If I were doing my normal look, I'd just do it myself.

Glamorous Down Wedding Hairstyle Idea - Kate Beckinsale Hairstyle

Photo: Getty Images

But at the same time, I also don't want to look... not like myself. A glamour girl I am not. On special occasions, I may flatiron and throw on a little eye shadow and a red lip, but that's about the extent of it. I have never gotten a blowout, or an eyebrow wax, or highlights, or done practically anything else that requires the effort of going to a beauty professional. In searching for makeup artists and hairstylists for the wedding, which turned into a much more epic hunt than I anticipated, I came across a ton that did glamorous, camera-ready updos and dramatic makeup, but that's not my bag. (Possibly complicating matters is that I live in and am getting married in New Jersey, land of the Snooki bump. I've started most of my conversations with hairdressers with the words "PLEASE, NO BUMP." A pretty, soft pouf like the one Kate Beckinsale is rocking above would do, though.) I wear my hair up occasionally, but it's most often because I'm going to the gym, overslept, or haven't washed it recently. That's just not the association I'm going for.

I've also used the bazillion weddings I've been to as a testing ground for my own look. A few brides I've known, although they looked gorgeous, chose more typical "wedding" styles that didn't really suit their own looks—or their personalities. One bride wore her hair in a super-high, super-curly style when she's normally a long, flatironed girl, and I just thought she looked... well, odd. I don't really think my walk down the aisle is the right time to try out something I've never done before—those pictures will last forever, and I'm paying too much money for them to sock them away in a drawer because I took a risk I regret.

Boho Wedding Hairstyle - Wedding Hairstyle Idea Kate Mara

Photo: Getty Images

So I've determined that my ultimate goal is too look like a high-def version of me, if you will. I want to take my original plan (the long, romantic hair and soft, pretty makeup that's similar to what I do every day) and amp it up. Whereas my normal hair is barely-contained frizz, I want it perfectly styled and in place all day, but still soft. I most often wear it down and feel more attractive with it that way, so I'm going with that. And if I do put on heavier makeup in my normal life, I always emphasize the eyes, so I want my makeup to do the same, just in a more dramatic way. I've mostly settled on a half-up, half-down look, but I'm still toying with it. I love the idea of a side ponytail (love Kate Mara's romantic take above) or long, loose waves. Whatever I settle on, I'm hoping I'll look like exactly what I want: myself at my best.

Should I Ditch My Regular Hairstylist for My Wedding Day?

hairstylist for your wedding advice

Photo: Bèla Adler & Salvador Fresneda

When it comes to your wedding hair, should you stick with your tried and true stylist—or find some one new? Glamour contributing beauty editor Andrea Pomerantz Lustig, author of How to Look Expensive, shares her tips for your tresses.

Often brides want to find new experts to do their hair for their wedding—and ditch their longtime stylist in the process. Is this a good idea? What are the pros and cons of going with some one new?

I think there are more pros for going with your regular stylist. They know your style, your hair, and most importantly, you. You'll feel more comfortable telling them exactly what you want for the big day and more comfortable having them around when you're dealing with inevitable wedding day stress. The downside is that your longtime stylist will also have an image of what you always look like in his or her mind, and might have a hard time envisioning you in any other way. Bring photos of bridal hairstyles you like and give him or her a try before moving on.

If you do want to work with some one new, a fresh set of eyes can help update your look—as long as you're very communicative about your likes and dislikes. In my book I talk about knowing your "absolute list"—the qualities of a hair cut and style you must have, as well as the qualities you can't stand. For example, I know I like volume on the sides but not on top; I like my hair parted in a three-quarter part and my ends curled out, not under. Knowing and communicating these preferences can help the new hairstylist nail your dream look.

In some cases, going with someone new is the only option—maybe you're planning a destination wedding and (understandably) don't want to foot the bill to fly out your hometown go-to. Just remember to do your research. Read reviews on Yelp and ask women at the reception site for local recommendations. Or better yet, see if they'll give you the names of a few past brides so you can drop them a note for advice. And try to arrive at your wedding location in time to do a meet-and-greet and a trial with the new stylist. If that's not possible, send him or her photo of yourself ahead of time, along with photos of the style you're aiming for. Then schedule a Skype session to get yourself more acquainted.

Wedding Hairstyle Inspiration from New York Fashion Week Spring 2013

Donna Karan Spring/Summer 2013 Runway Hairstyle

Photos: WWD/Kyle Ericksen

On the hunt for modern wedding hair inspiration? Take a few cues from New York Fashion Week, the rocking kick-off to the Spring/Summer 2013 season. Right out of the gate, clear trends emerged—all of which are wedding worthy—including deep side parts, textured bouffants, and massive shine. And for you edgier brides-to-be? Think pink! (And neon yellow!)

Vera Wang Spring/Summer 2013 Runway Hairstyle Photos: WWD/Kyle Ericksen (right); WWD/John Aquino (left)

VERA WANG

The Look: A riff on old-school beehives in the form of artsy, textured "turbans."

For the bride who... Routinely pairs her Chuck Taylors with a twinset and pearls, and looks like she just walked off the set of a Wes Anderson film.

DIY Details: On behalf of Fekkai, hair superstar Paul Hanlon prepped the models' locks with Strong Hold Volume Mousse before drying. Next, working in sections, he spritzed with Sheer Hold Hairspray, flattened with an iron and back-combed from root to ends before swirling and pinning.

Your Big Day Takeaway: Err on the preppy side by minimizing a bit of that swirling.

Carolina Herrera Spring/Summer 2013 Runway Hairstyle

CAROLINA HERRERA

The Look: As a counterpoint to all the lightness and fluidity of this collection (think beaucoup chiffon and tulle), hair guru Orlando Pita, on behalf of Moroccanoil, crafted ultra-sleek down hairstyles (above). This not-a-strand-out-of-place style is perfect for "the confident woman of today," Pita noted. Bonus: "It looks as strong on short lengths as long, and it's fast and easy to do."

For the bride who... Prizes precision and pristine.

DIY Details: Pita applied Volumizing Mousse, then dried the hair straight on sides and back using the Ionic Ceramic Brush to create volume. For "structure," he then misted Luminous Hairspray Strong at the root of each section. At the top, he took graduated half-inch sections starting at the crown—again misting each with hairspray—arranged it just so, and misted yet again. Flyaways were smoothed with Frizz Control.

Your Big Day Takeaway: Hair worn this straight needs to glisten like diamonds. Set the stage by snipping off any stray split ends. A tiny, quarter-inch trim 10 days before your wedding will be just what the doctor ordered.

Donna Karan Spring/Summer 2013 Runway Hairstyle Photos: WWD/Kyle Ericksen (right); Fairchild Archive (left)

DONNA KARAN

The Look: Wispy, caught-in-a-gust-of-wind buns, crafted by Wella Professionals global artistic director Eugene Souleiman.

For the bride who... Is totally down with a slightly boho, decidedly imperfect updo.

DIY Details: Opting for roughness rather than soft shine, Souleiman coated hair with Ocean Spritz Beach Texture Spray. Then, using a ponytail as the base, he arranged the hair into a flat, vertical bun, letting lots of wisps around the hairline fly free.

Your Big Day Takeaway: For an overall effect that's a touch more bridal, tame a few of those loose tendrils.

Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2013 Runway Hairstyle

Photos: WWD/Kyle Ericksen (right); Fairchild Archive (left)

MARC JACOBS

The Look: Combining one of the biggest trends of the season—a deep side part—with peroxide blonde, the overall effect was pretty punky. While not every model sported the bright locks, enough did to telegraph Redken creative consultant Guido Palau's bleached blonde beauty message.

For the bride who... Has a Edie Sedgwick, Gwen Stefani, or Debbie Harry fixation and wants to lighten up—way up—for her wedding.

DIY Details: The bigger, the better. Palau used a fleet of Redken brews to pump up these coifs, including Guts 20 Volume Spray Mousse Foam, Refresh 01 Aerosol Hair Powder Dry Shampoo and Quick Tease, a new concoction that's equal parts fiber and spray. As for the style itself, it's essentially a bouffant-meets-low ponytail.

Your Big Day Takeaway: To avoid venturing into Donald Trump comb-over territory, push that front swoop a bit further off your forehead.

Skaist-Taylor Spring/Summer 2013 Runway Hairstyle

Photos: Courtesy of Oribe Hair Care (right); Fairchild Archive (left)

SKAIST-TAYLOR

The Look: Drawing inspiration from Diana Ross and "a bit of a Domincan feel," Oribe Hair Care lead stylist Kien Hoang opted for tons of volume and tight, natural curls.

For the bride who... Likes to cut loose, and wants her own special brand of carefree beauty to shine through.

DIY Details: After prepping hair with Foundation Mist and drying it, Hoang set tight pin curls with Impermeable Anti-Humidity Spray. He flat-ironed to add a bit of heat, then brushed out the curls, teasing and misting with Dry Texturizing Spray.

Your Big Day Takeaway: When you're going this big make sure your hair is in primo condition. Consider investing in a salon deep-conditioning treatment, or go the DIY route with weekly at-home slathering sessions.

Ruffian Spring/Summer 2013 Runway Hairstyle Photos: WWD/Thomas Iannaccone

RUFFIAN

The Look: Paying tribute to their home base in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Ruffian designers Brian Wolk and Claude Morais set Bumble and Bumble hair stylist Neil Moodie free to create sky-high, rockabilly pompadours with slicked-back sides.

For the bride who... Has her DVR set to record every episode of Girls—while she's out doing shots with her bridesmaids.

Your Big Day Takeaway: You can scale Ruffian-esque heights—or not. The real key to the look are the slicked-down sides. Consider anchoring them with matching accessories.

Oscar de la Renta Spring/Summer 2013 Runway Hairstyle Photos: WWD/Kyle Ericksen (right); Fairchild Archive (left)

OSCAR DE LA RENTA

The Look: Highlights of an altogether different stripe—in hot pinks, neon yellows, and cool blues and greens—added a subversive edge to stylist Brian Buenaventura's otherwise traditional, ladies-who-lunch updos.

For the bride who... Has a wild streak, tempered with a heavy dose of femininity.

Your Big Day Takeaway: One major commitment is enough on your wedding day! So unless you are deeply in love with a particular hue (and don't mind sporting it throughout your honeymoon), opt for a temporary dye.

Bibhu Mohapatra Spring/Summer 2013 Runway Hairstyle Photos: WWD/Robert Mitra

BIBHU MOHAPATRA

The Look: In addition to severe center parts and super-slick locks, Amit Abraham, lead stylist for L'Oréal Professionnel, threw in a big twist: elaborately braided fishtail buns. (Or "cocoons," as Abraham christened them backstage.)

For the bride who... Likes to strike a balance between trends (fishtail braids!) and tradition (the lovely, ladylike updo).

DIY Details: Mythic Oil Reinforcing Milk was sprayed at the roots to flatten the part, topped with a bootleg batch of True Grip Powder, which won't be available in salons until early next year. After the cocoons were anchored in place, they were spritzed with Freezing Mist and Perfect Shimmer.

Your Big Day Takeaway: Smitten with this look but have short locks? Fake it by attaching a faux-fishtail braid in an exact match to your natural hue.

Jason Wu Spring/Summer 2013 Runway Hairstyle Photos: WWD/Kyle Ericksen (right); Fairchild Archive (left)

JASON WU

The Look: The ghost of a uber-photographer Helmut Newton wafted through this collection, making for a show steeped in sexed-up glamour. And the hair, whipped up by Odile Gilbert for Kératase? "Expensive, elegant, but not vulgar" updos, parted on the side and slicked-down, Gilbert told Style.com.

For the bride who... Has a weakness for flapper-era Marcel waves, and is counting down the seconds until the third season of Downton Abbey crosses the pond.

DIY Details: To prep the hair and camouflage post-summer damage, Gilbert deployed Elixir Ultime. Parting the hair on the side, she crafted a braid. On the other, loose side, Gilbert created a wave that she then lacquered in place with Double-Force Hairspray.

Your Big Day Takeaway: Although the "wet look" has been huge for a few seasons now, it doesn't play quite as well sailing down the aisle as it does a runway. With your stylist, determine the happy medium between shiny and slick.

Should I Get a Pre-Wedding Makeover?

Budget Wedding Beauty Tips

Photo: Thayer Allyson Gowdy

You'll look gorgeous on your wedding day—but will you look like yourself? Glamour contributing beauty editor Andrea Pomerantz Lustig, author of How to Look Expensive, shares why you should let your natural beauty shine on your big day.

BRIDES: When women get engaged, there's a tendency to want to do a major beauty overhaul from top to bottom. What's the best way for brides to arrive at a pretty middle ground—so they look like the very best version of themselves, but natural, too?

ANDREA POMERANTZ LUSTIG: The goal of good hair and makeup is to make you look like yourself, only better—which is actually the name of the makeup chapter in my book! Many women make the mistake of thinking they have to redo themselves before their wedding, when actually they need to stay true to themselves and strive for polished and put together, without veering into overdone.

I think the best way to achieve this middle ground is to keep the "you, only better" philosophy in mind with every beauty decision you make for your wedding. If it doesn't feel comfortable, don't buy it or do it. The goal is to achieve a look that gives you confidence and makes you feel like a million bucks—while staying true to the look your fiancé fell in love with. That way, you'll be noticed for your happiness and inner beauty at your wedding, not the new hair color or lipstick shade you're sporting.

How to Look Expensive by Andrea Pomerantz Lustig

And I speak from experience! I let a colorist convince me to double-process my hair for my own wedding and make me blonder. Now I look at the pictures and my hair just looks brassy and unnatural and it doesn't match my skin tone. It wasn't me and now I have to live with the evidence.
