What's the worst thing that you're worried might happen on your big day? A summer shower sends your guests seeking shelter during your outdoor ceremony? A tipsy bridesmaid spills a drop of her red wine on your gorgeous gown at the reception? How about the priest punching the best man? No surprise if that didn't make your worst case scenario list. It's a little cray cray, no? But that nuptial nightmare was a reality for one wedding party in Cyprus, where church "I dos" turned into an honest-to-goodness bridal brawl.
It's an old Cypriot wedding tradition for the best man to give the groom a slap on the back once his buddy says his "I do's." But apparently, the hotheaded officiant didn't exactly approve of the gesture.
According to the New York Post, when the best man — the groom's 22-year-old brother — went in for the traditional slap, the priest officiating the wedding held up his hand in protest. But his request went unheeded. So what's a priest to do? Punch, the guy in the chest and face, of course! But, hey, at least he put his Bible down first, according to a witnessing family member. That's showing some restraint, right? "It's a tradition that I don't condone, but that was uncalled for," the family member said. Duh.
As you might expect, the ceremony chaos brought the wedding to grinding halt. (Would you continue with all your big day festivities after your new brother-in-law just took a hit to the face?) The best man was taken to the hospital for a particularly well-dressed emergency room visit and the punchy priest hightailed it out of there. "The wedding was spoilt after that with many people not showing up for the reception after word spread, but we made the best of it," the family member explained.
The bishop of the diocese is reportedly looking into the matter of the wedding-turned-MMA-match, but for now at least the newlyweds managed to get their wedding certificate. That's all that matters, right? Right?!
