Just 30 miles south of San Francisco, Half Moon Bay feels much farther from the city. A popular stop on road trips up and down Highway 1, and an easy day trip from San Francisco, it's also a great spot for a Bay Area mini-moon. Close enough to be convenient, it's far enough to be a true getaway from everyday life. Here are five reasons to take a mini-moon to Half Moon Bay.

Active Adventures on Land and Sea
Half Moon Bay occupies a prime coastal position, making it a perfect spot for those looking to hit the beach or spend time on the water. Among the seaside activities are horseback riding, hiking, exploring the many area beaches such as Half Moon Bay State Beach, kayaking, whale watching, or taking surfing lessons — or simply watching the pros tackle the waves from a comfortable spot on the sand.

Oceanfront Luxury
The 300-room Ritz-Carlton at Half Moon Bay sits on a bluff overlooking the ocean. Surrounded on three sides by perfectly manicured lawns and golf courses, it's a luxurious grand dame of a hotel with a relaxed feel and incredible views of the coast. Guests are greeted with a glass of wine, and there's an onsite pool, fitness center, spa, hair salon, golf course, lounge, two restaurants, a wine bar, and an outdoor terrace bar with romantic fire pits. A bagpiper serenades the sunset each night, and the hotel offers bike rentals for cruising around the resort and on nearby coastal trails. You couldn't ask for more!

Delicious Seafood
There's nearly always a line at Sam's Chowder House, an oceanfront restaurant known for its quality seafood and beautiful ocean views that embody the California coast lifestyle. Make reservations for lunch and fill up with a decadent lobster roll piled high with butter and lobster, or go for dinner to watch the sunset with a bottle of wine.

Shopping and Dining on Main Street
Half Moon Bay's "downtown" is a quintessential Main Street. Stretching less than a mile, it's lined with charming boutiques and handicraft shops, plus plenty of places to wet your whistle and fill your belly. Indulge in wine and cheese tastings at Half Moon Bay Wine and Cheese or go Italian at Pasta Moon. With Sushi, French, Thai, Mexican, and Indian restaurants scattered around Main Street, you won't go hungry. For something a bit more romantic, head to Navio at the Ritz, for dinner with an ocean view.
