Indonesian Honeymoon Ideas: How to Plan a Wellness Getaway in Bali

The Indonesian island perhaps best known in the U.S. for being the "love" destination in "Eat, Pray, Love," Bali is indeed a magical place, one blessed with abundant natural beauty, warm, tropical weather year round, and a vibrant artisan culture with a spiritual core. For newlyweds looking to completely unplug from life's routines and focus instead on wellness, and romance, Bali is the ultimate honeymoon destination.

For the most part, resorts are clustered along Bali's southern and eastern shores and around Ubud, the island's spiritual and cultural nexus set amid a lush tropical rainforest, steep rice terraces, and ancient Hindu sites that are hallmarks of the island's interior landscape. Two very different locales, both quintessential Balinese experiences: Honeymooners would be remiss to have traveled this far and not experience the best of both worlds.

Fortunately, that's not hard to do. Ubud is only a 90 minute journey from the coast and transfers are easily arranged. Go the luxe route (it is your honeymoon, after all!) with the Bali by Four Seasons package: Couples begin at the Four Seasons Jimbaran Bay, a spectacular all-villa oceanfront property, before retreating to the Four Seasons Sayan on the outskirts of Ubud. The Anahata Chakra Ceremony, a rose-based ritual that focuses on the heart, is one of a number of holistic offerings at the Saytan's Sacred Ritual Spa.

For a more DIY approach, consider pairing Hotel Komune Resort and Beach Club, a beachfront slice of paradise facing the legendary Keramas surf break, or Katamama, one of the island's newest offerings that is a study in Indonesian craftsmanship, down to the handmade Balinese bricks, with either the Bisma Eight or Chapung SeBali Resort & Spa in Ubud, both of which offer bespoke honeymoon packages that will have you and your husband swooning.

Part of Bali's magic is the delight of discovery: happening upon a beautiful secluded beach, trekking through the rainforest to a sacred cultural site, verdant landscapes, serene sunrises, a different vantage point from which to watch the sunset each evening. Exploring the town of Ubud, which landed on The New York Times list of "Places to Travel in 2016," is a journey into the heart and soul of Bali's art scene. From traditional Balinese cultural performances to artisan shops, galleries and working studios, Ubud is a cultural treasure. One of Ubud's most famous studios is the John Hardy Workshop, which was founded in Bali in 1975. It's worth a visit for the architecture alone, but who knows what else will catch your eye?
