Should You Take Family Photos Before the Wedding Ceremony?

Wedding Photography

Wedding celebrations can often feel like mini-family reunions. It's the time and the place when family members from near and far gather together to celebrate one of the biggest days of your life. Often times, your wedding may be the first time in years that all of these family members have been in the same room, making it the perfect time to capture this get together on film.

So when you're planning out your photo list with your wedding photographer before the big day arrives, you'll need to decide if you want to do family portrait photos before or after the ceremony.

Taking photos before the wedding is a new practice, kicking out the old tradition that the bride and the groom can't see each other until the ceremony starts. A big positive of this new custom is the freedom and the time to take photos before the wedding celebration actually begins. But a big negative, is that gathering family members together for photos before the wedding, can be stressful, hectic, and often times a giant headache.

If you do decide to go this route of taking photos before the ceremony, be sure to have a photo list already mapped out, so the photographer knows who you want photos of. It's also important to make sure that you ask family members to arrive at a certain time so that they will be there during the family portrait hour. The best way to get this done, without giving yourself a pre-wedding panic attack, is to ask a friend or a family member to be in charge of organizing these photos, making sure everyone who needs to be in them is present, and helping the photographer move this process along so that it doesn't take more time than necessary.
