While it's one thing to pull out prom pictures and cringe at that god-awful updo you chose (um, what were you thinking!?), it's a different story when it comes to your wedding day hair. Wouldn't you hate to look back on photos and shutter in disgust? We think so! To avoid a dated 'do that totes makes you look stuck in the 2010s, heed the advice of these seasoned stylists, who know a thing or two about picking a timeless wedding hairstyle.
1. Don't overdo it
Simplicity really is key! "It's about shape, texture, and movement. Fresh feeling hair that moves but doesn't lose its shape or style, particularly if the wedding is outside," notes celebrity hairstylist Jamal Hammadi. This combined with a classic color tone (i.e. nothing crazy colored or streaky) will give you wedding day hair that's truly timeless.
2. Stay true to you
And your own personal style, of course. "You always want to look like the very best version of yourself on the day of," stresses Chanel Peraza, Corporate Style Director at Blo Blow Dry Bar in Miami. For instance, women who describe themselves as laid-back types shouldn't select anything too fussy. For these ladies, she recommends something soft and beachy. Always wear your hair down? Then don't do an updo! "Instead, try adding soft curls or waves and sweep a little off your face for a more formal look." Matrix StyleLink Celebrity Stylist, George Papanikolas, echoes the above points. "I think we need to change the way we define 'timeless.' When we think of timeless, we think of that one hairstyle that fits all, but I think timeless should be that one hairstyle that looks good on you and makes you feel the prettiest." We concur!
3. Keep it cohesive
What's the theme or overall vibe for your whole wedding? If you don't have one then nothing will look cohesive, including your hair, cautions Sheenon Olson, celebrity hairstylist and Creative Director at ATMA Beauty. "If your theme is more organic (say with wild flowers and lace pastels) then your hair can be more organic as well. That doesn't mean your hair should be 'messy,' but you do want to have locks that look lived in with a more natural feel," he advises. Planning a big, black tie affair with a structured wedding dress? Well, your hair should follow. In this scenario, Olson would suggest a classic clean chignon. "The right combination of each component of your look is what makes it timeless and classic. As a general rule, the dress, hair, and makeup should all complement each other and not compete."
4. Take a cue from chic celebs
Seeking some inspiration? Look no further than our favorite sophisticated chic celebrity brides. What do Kate Moss, Hilary Rhoda, Olivia Palermo, and Amal Clooney all have in common? Well, according to bridal hairstylists Lauren E. Hack and Vanessa Ungaro of LAUREN+VANESSA, a classic hairstyle with a modern twist. "For example, a loosely pulled back ponytail a la Palermo is perfect for the woman who is sweet and flirtatious, while a low chignon, French twist or classic set never goes out of style." In general, timeless wedding styles are beautiful, elegant, and flattering on every woman, they say.
5. Try one of these always on trend styles
Trends may come and go, but according to GLAMSQUAD Creative Director Giovanni Vaccaro, there are always consistent themes that carry through from one season to the next. One such classic style is the classic chignon. "This polished and secure updo is a timeless black-tie look." For dreamy and dramatic brides with a retro-chic style, he recommends side-parted old-Hollywood waves that have great movement yet are still guaranteed to hold throughout the night. And last but not least, a half-up twist with cascading waves is a classic warm weather must. "This look initially featured a tightly pulled-back top half with defined curls, however, it has evolved into a much more delicate and romantic 'do with pieces gently pulled back in twists and braids." Perfect for the effortless boho bride.
