Honeymooning in Playa del Carmen? Here's Where to Stay!

Our travel editor tried out one of Playa del Carmen's latest, and most romantic, properties to give you the inside scoop as you plan a Mexican honeymoon!

The first thing I noticed upon walking into the new Thompson Playa del Carmen? The smell.

Allow me to explain: Nary a detail is overlooked by the brains behind Thompson hotels, who worked with the boutique fragrance company 12.29 to develop a specific scent for their brand — which is pumped through the air vents at uber-romantic properties from New York to London. Having stayed at the hotel in Miami Beach last winter, I took one whiff of "Velvet," and knew I was at a Thompson.

This olfactory recognition instantly makes you feel at home. And isn't that what everyone wants when they travel — to find a slice of home somewhere else in the world?

If that's the point of travel, then the point of a honeymoon is surely to connect with the one you love, in a place you love. And at Thompson Playa del Carmen, I'd say that's easily accomplished.

The property bills itself as the first "lifestyle hotel," set on the bustling La Quinta Avenida (the main drag in Playa del Carmen), and it really does feel like a city-hotel-meets-beach-resort. The main building hosts 92 airy rooms — which feel worlds away from the touristy streets below — and are filled with chic artwork, custom sateen-woven bedding, and spacious double closets. That's not to say you can't people watch from your private balcony (many rooms have them), which also overlook a cool mural painted on top of the restaurant below.

The highlight of the hotel, however, is undoubtedly the 30,000-square-foot rooftop, which has one of the most insane pools you've ever seen. It wraps from one end of the building to another, with different sections for cooling off, including a waist-deep underwater booth that's perfect for lunch alfresco. (For the most Instagram-worthy moment, head to the far left-hand side, and take a photo of you and your man in the super-cool, curved white chairs set into the water.)

The rooftop is also home to two dining outposts: Cinco, for easy breakfast and lunch; and CATCH, a dinner-only restaurant and sushi bar that's the first Mexican outpost of the trendy New York City eatery. (Expect the same delicious menu, serving up sharing-friendly small plates, like crispy shrimp with spicy mayo, tuna tartare on crunchy rice cakes, and wild mushroom spaghetti.)

For couples that really want to unwind, however, we recommend booking in at the new Beach House — a 27-room outpost located down the street from the main hotel. You'll get the same spacious suites, but also added privacy and direct access to the beach, and another large pool and bar (for afternoon margaritas, natch). Also on tap? Dishes at C Grill, the on-site restaurant, which serves a health-conscious breakfast medley (mushroom omelets, granola parfaits, fresh juices and smoothies), because who wants to throw all that pre-wedding diet and exercise down the drain? (At least not right away.)
