There's nothing worse than lipstick flaking off your lips. (Well maybe that's a dramatic statement. Let's say when it comes to beauty, there's nothing worse.) To make sure that never happens to you — gasp! A bride-to-be! — we asked celebrity makeup artist, Katie Jane Hughes, to spill the five-step regimen that will keep them moisturized and pillowy from the engagement to the honeymoon.

1. Exfoliate.
Your face isn't the only thing you should exfoliate at night. Every few days, slough away dry skin with a lip exfoliator, like Sara Happ Sparkling Peach Lip Scrub ($24, available at Nordstrom). Let it sit on your lips for 5 minutes before washing off with warm water so your lips can soak in its nourishing grape seed and jojoba oils.

2. Treat.
Hydrate and soften lips with a lip mask — a step Hughes calls "essential." She relies on Nugg Beauty Intense Lip Boosting Mask ($7.99, Nugg Beauty). "It really primes your lips for lipstick," she says.

3. Plump.
Every morning, apply a treatment with collagen-boosting benefits around the outline of your lips. We like Caudalie Polyphenol C15 Anti-Wrinkle Eye and Lip Cream ($42, available at Sephora). The collagen not only plumps lips and fills in fine lines, but fewer fine less mean less opportunity for lipstick bleed-out!

4. Protect.
Nourish your lips with a protective balm, like Drunk Elephant Lippe ($22, Drunk Elephant). It contains four feather-light oils, along with Shea butter and Vitamin C to hydrate, protect, and repair. With most balms, you have to let the oils soak in for a few minutes before applying lipstick, but because Lippe's formula is so light, you can put on lipstick right after using it. (We've even put it on top of lipstick and it hasn't disrupted it at all.)

5. Prettify.
Now for the most fun part — the lipstick! Hughes recommends patting on a base layer of nude lipstick first, which she says "helps to conceal imperfections and provide a smooth base for a bolder, brighter color." Try Butter London Plush Rush in Free ($22, Butter London).
