Do We Have to Invite Our Officiant to the Reception?

Etiquette, Planning Tips

Aside from the two people who are, you know, about to get married, the most important person at the wedding ceremony is the officiant. He or she guides the ceremony, administers the vows, and is the one who gets to declare you a married couple! So with such an important role on your wedding day, should your officiant be invited to celebrate with you at the reception? Our experts weigh in.

Inviting your officiant to the wedding reception depends on what type of officiant you'll have. Here's what we recommend, based on the most common types of officiants.

If you're getting married at the courthouse, there's a pretty slim chance you'll even know your officiant before you arrive, so there's no need to extend an invitation to your reception.

Having a religious leader perform your ceremony? The invite depends on your relationship. If you've joined a new house of worship for your ceremony, or are having a destination wedding at a church or temple you don't attend, you're not required to invite the person who will be performing your ceremony. However, if you've been attending the same church your whole life, or the priest or rabbi who is leading your ceremony is a close family friend (or even a relative), you will probably want to invite them. After all, they've seen you grow up and have witnessed the evolution of your relationship together! Keep in mind that most houses of worship perform multiple wedding ceremonies on any given day, so there's a possibility your officiant may have another wedding to perform later in the day. They might have to miss cocktail hour, but hopefully they'll be able to join you for dinner!

If anyone else is getting ordained in order to perform your ceremony — a friend, sibling, family member, etc. — chances are they were on your guest list before you even asked them to officiate, so this one's a no-brainer.
