This Musical Couple Turned Their Wedding Into a Full-Blown Rock Opera Musical

While most couples personalize their wedding days with handwritten vows, heartfelt readings or some other unique gesture, the brides and grooms usually stick to a pretty tried-and-true script. But for San Francisco couple Rebecca Bortman and Bryan Garza — who together make up the musical duo Love, Jerks — that clearly wasn't how they envisioned their September 2015 wedding playing out. Instead, the musically inclined lovebirds turned their wedding into a full-blown rock opera, complete with eight original songs, confetti canons, and backup-singing bridesmaids.

Who knew that going to a wedding meant having to show your concert ticket? With a one-of-a-kind celebration held at the appropriately titled bar and concert venue, The Chapel, Bortman and Garza — who are the lead singers for the bands Happy Fangs and Scissors for Lefty, respectively — took the stage (literally) to mark one of life's milestone moments, Entertainment Tonight reports.

Even before finalizing their wedding rock opera, music was very much part of the process leading up to their epic nuptials. Bortman and Garza first met at San Francisco's iconic Bottom of the Hill in 2012, and two years later, when the duo returned to that same fateful site, Garza dropped to his knee and proposed to Bortman on-stage — but only after covering Elvis Presley's classic, "Can't Help Falling in Love."

When asked about their separate favorite memories of the night, the newly married pair couldn't help but comment on moments shared together! "Definitely the moment of our big kiss," the bride told Entertainment Tonight. "It was as close as we should get to fireworks in a rock club." When asked his favorite moment of the night, Garza stayed true to his musical roots. "I had a moment of pause right before taking the stage at the beginning of the show. The wedding was already going on and it was my turn to jump on stage and start the first song. I realized that we were about to debut all the songs we had written together, in front of everybody we love. I was truly lost in the moment."

Not only did this joint twosome show their love for one another on their big day, but the happy couple even managed to collaborate pre-ceremony, showing their united front in an effort to make their wedding day as special as it could be. "When it came to dreaming it up, it was collaborative," said Garza, "When it came to dividing up the tasks: Rebecca took the reins with a lot of the logistical work." The groom continued by revealing, "Meanwhile, I locked myself up in the studio every night, chiseling away at the song." It looks like all of that dedication certainly paid off!

When asked if a rock opera celebration could make its way into the future of the couple's anniversaries, the pink-haired bride answered with, "Yes! I would marry Bryan any day of the week! And yes, we intend to take this on the road. For our first anniversary, we intend to put out the 'Love, Jerks' album, which will include songs from the rock opera!"
