The search is on! Now that you've finally found the one (your wedding gown, duh), it's time to get your girls all dressed to impress for the big day too. So walk a mile in their shoes for a minute. Because, if you've ever been a bridesmaid before, then there's one thing you know for sure: dress shopping with a bunch of ladies can be quite the trip. We're giving you a little glimpse into what's going through your squad's heads on that first epic dress shopping excursion.
"OMG, I can't believe she's getting married. This is so much fun!"
Things just got really real! When you first asked them to be in the wedding it was hard for everyone to contain their excitement. And going bridesmaid dress shopping together is just the icing on the cake. You can't believe it's actually happening, and you're so incredibly happy to have the best squad by your side.
"Free champagne? Um, yes please!"
It's not like you and your girls to turn down free champagne is it?
"Wow, look at all these options. So many options."
Admittedly, it can be overwhelming, particularly for a first time bridesmaid. All the different colors and styles can be enough to make a girl's head spin. Make it easier for them, and way less intimidating, by narrowing it down to one or two designers before hitting the shops.
"This dress. Yassss. Love it!"
The actual dress in question will probably vary depending on which bridesmaid you're talking to. But you can bet your bottom dollar that there will be one or two dresses they will totally be talking up to you — hey, you want them to feel and look good up at the altar!
"Sh*t! That's expensive."
If you've been a bridesmaid before you know the dreaded price tag very well. Is it worth it for $300? Can you find something similar for less? Can you give your girls a break and give them a few different budget options? Remember, you've been there before.
"Oh God, not that dress. Please don't make me try on that dress. Okay, I guess I'll try it on..."
Don't put your girlfriends through wearing that awful dress! Even if it's something straight out of the movie 27 Dresses, they'll try it on just to appease you. Let's be honest though, there's no reason to have them standing next to you in something that makes them feel ridiculous. When in doubt, keep it simple.
"Okay, this dress totally makes me look like Shamu. It's a big fat no."
There's always that one bridesmaid dress that doesn't flatter anyone, and your girls are hoping and praying with all their might that it won't be the one you choose. That would be such a disaster!
"Ahhh, obsessed with this one. My curves are so on point right now."
For every bad dress, there's one that's so on point. And maybe just maybe it's right on budget too! Give them something that's universally flattering, or available in a variety of silhouettes to accommodate all body types (see below!).
"Wait what? We can pick our own style? Best bride ever!"
You'll easily win bride of the year simply by giving your girls leeway to choose their own dress even if it has to be a certain color or by a particular designer. Some control is so much better than none; remember that.
"Well maybe I can wear it again?"
On second thought, probably not. No matter what anyone says, a bridesmaid dress is just that: a bridesmaid dress. So be realistic — the chances of your bridesmaids actually wearing it again are pretty slim. Never say never though...
