Flower maestro Ron Wendt has worked his magic at some of New York's biggest weddings and at parties for Cartier and Chanel. Here, his secrets for wowing with blooms.

Arm your pro with inspiration.
As a designer, I want to crawl inside a bride's head. Bring tear sheets, fabric swatches, and images you love to your first meeting. Even if they have nothing to do with weddings, they'll help us see your vision.

You should like the florist, not just the flowers.
A bride should have confidence in her designer's style, and he should understand the journey she's on. It comes down to trust.

Spoil your guests.
At the reception, you want as many people to have flowers in front of them as possible. They have given up their weekend; think of the arrangements as a thank-you.

Go wild.
There's a return to meadow-style flowers like cosmos, which are delicate and sweet. A loose and relaxed bouquet is really on trend.

The trend I wish would go away?
Leaf-wrapped glass vases. It's been done, it's been done, it's been done.

Any venue can be transformed.
For the wedding of a member of Bon Jovi, I turned a riding stable into Versailles. We brought in topiaries and blew up copies of beautiful Fragonard paintings to cover the walls. It was fun to see such opulence in a raw barn.

Huge boutonnieres are so Four Weddings and a Funeral.
I can't stand a calla lily on a lapel. Think about a sprig of berries or a simple ivy leaf. Something small and elegant.

To cut costs...
Do a small hydrangea centerpiece or even a single stem in a bottle vase and repeat it umpteen times down the table. Repetition and simplicity — I can't stress them enough!
