WATCH: See 100 Years of Engagement Rings in 3 Minutes!

Celebrity, Engagement Rings

Today's National Proposal Day and what's the best part of the happy holiday, besides all of that champagne, smooches, and popped questions? The dazzling diamonds, of course! With all of the engagement rings being slipped on for the first time today, we definitely have sparklers on the brain. (But when don't we, really?) So, we were so excited to go back in time with Mode's new 100 Years of Engagement Rings video.

What better way to celebrate National Proposal Day than looking back on the diamond rings that went with the popped questions of yesteryear. Mode explored the finger bling of the past ten decades and it's got us dreaming of vintage sparklers and Art Deco diamonds.

So what reigned supreme way back when? Well, in the 1910's, a small and simple rose-cut diamond on a gold band was the typical trend. While in the Roaring '20's, it was all about Art Deco-style bling with elaborate band cravings and enough sparkle to make The Great Gatsby's Daisy Buchanan cry with joy.

By the swinging fifties, bands and baubles significantly grew in size to catch the eye of the fabulous dames of the era. But by the '60's, simple once again proved to be chic. In fact, those popular emerald-cut sparklers of the decade are still very much 'in' today. (Ahm, Mariah Carey's epic engagement ring — with 35 added carats, of course!) Some things just never go out of style...

As for the '80's, big hair meant big baubles to match! A large round-cut dazzler, adorned with two baguette beauties was the way to go.

Before we knew it, we were reliving the pretty little sparklers of the '90's — princess-cut, silver band, and all. Remember those days? As for the 2000's, dainty diamond adorned rings were in, with pavé stones journeying all the way around the band.

What about nowadays, you ask? Well, chic cushion-cut diamonds in a rainbow of vibrant, unique hues are among the most popular, according to Mode. You can thank celebs like Blake Lively, Carrie Underwood, Iggy Azalea, and even Kate Middleton (yes, even royalty got in on this trend!) for making this colorful craze a mainstay.
