4 Must-Know Wedding Flower Tips That Every Bride Should Follow, from Floral Pros Putnam & Putnam

Ever wondered what it takes to become an expert in wedding flowers? We went straight to the source, none other than the pair behind one of our favorite boutique flower specialists, Putnam & Putnam. Married florist duo Michael and Darroch Putnam sat down with BRIDES to talk the ins and outs of wedding flowers. from the importance of choosing a venue to timelines and why they love working with brides.

1. First and foremost on the adorable couple's checklist is keeping an open mind. "Don't get too set on one particular flower," says Darroch. They suggest keeping the focus on inspiration and colors instead of on a particular flower that might not be in season. They also suggest checking to see what's in season when your wedding is scheduled.

2. But before flowers comes the venue. They suggest doing a walk through with the florist to dictate the direction of the flowers. Also if you're looking at more of an installation piece (like a gorgeous flower wall), the venue is a very important part of the process.

3. For the bride on a budget, the Putnams suggest focusing on one show stopper entry piece and beautiful center pieces rather than the individual bouquets for the bridal party. Think about where flowers will be concentrated.

4. And how long in advance should you be setting this floral timeline? The Putnams think six months is plenty of time! If you book a year out, often styles change, new trends come up and brides change their minds.

Of course we all know flowers take out a big chunk of the bridal budget, but there's a reason for that, according to the Putnams. "There's a lot of love put in to a wedding, and I don't think that a lot of brides consider how much time, and effort and sort of passion is put in to one job," says Michael. Don't forget that the cost of flowers includes travel, labor, instal and breakdown.

So what is this duo's favorite part of creating gorgeous floral designs for wedding? Creating a memory for the happy couple! "It's really exciting to make a bride happy," says Michael. We couldn't agree more!
