Weddings are expensive, but until you actually dive head first into planning your own, oftentimes you don't realize how much the little stuff can add up and cost you more than just money. Take it from these brides who, in retrospect, wish they had saved some of their hard earned dough instead of over-investing in these details.

Small Décor Items
"One thing that I wish I would have saved both time and money on is small décor pieces. I always tell brides now that Pinterest features all of these beautiful detail shots, but on the big day it all gets lost. For example, my large décor (think large letters, string lights, etc.) were perfect in my photos and for the ambiance, whereas smaller handmade signage, mason jar flower arrangements, cute straws and personalized napkins were completely lost both during the day and in pictures." — Christine

A Full-Time Planner
"My biggest regret by far is hiring a full time wedding planner. If you're decent at planning, this really isn't necessary and will save you a couple thousand dollars in the long run. We really didn't need our planner until the day of!" — Jamie

The Shoes
"Looking back, I definitely wouldn't have spent so much money on my shoes. They were a huge splurge! Since I got married in the Caribbean, they were kicked off almost immediately after the ceremony. You'll never wear your white or cream satin shoes again and no one sees them beyond the tip peeking out from under your dress. At least they were not destroyed and I was able to pass them on to my sister-in-law who got married next." — Denise

The Favors
"For our wedding I spent a lot of time and energy thinking of a great favor for our guests. In the end I decided on a lottery ticket for everyone, which I still think is a cute idea, but at the end of the evening many were left at the tables. If I had to do it over I would have used that money in the catering budget to hand out a midnight snack to everyone as they exited the venue." — Susan

The Programs & Fans
"My mom and mother-in-law really pushed for us to have programs since they're both super traditional in that sense. While we didn't spend a ton of money to create them, no one really used them and they honestly just went to waste. Same with the personalized fans we had made, ugh!" — Cassie

Paper Items
"We really went overboard on all the paper items, like the save the dates and invitations, and had to have the best of the best. If we could do it all over again, I would have cut back and not gone the custom route. We could have used that extra money elsewhere in our budget or put it toward items for our home, which would have been way more practical ultimately. With all that said though, I did love how the save the dates and invitations came out. Just so expensive!" — Jade
