The votes are in for this crazy act of love! Emerson College students, Arden Jurskis and Kenzy Peach, took the Iowa caucuses to a whole new level after faking an engagement during a Ted Cruz rally in Des Moines on Sunday. The not-so-in-love college students used the rally as a demonstration for their political stance on marriage, but could never have expected what the Republican presidential candidate did to congratulate them!
It's all politics. The campaign trail — turned bended knee moment — was the perfect backdrop for some of Des Moines' most controversial matters of the heart, reports the Boston Globe. The very fake engagement was captured in one of the Internet's most widely shared photos, that perfectly displayed the emotions of the presidential candidate during the unknowingly scripted milestone moment. The snapshot shows the two Emerson students hugging after their fake engagement, with an enthusiastic Cruz showing his joyous appreciation by raising his hands in the background, looking to be mid-clap. During Jurskis' bended knee moment, Cruz allegedly placed his hands on each of the student's shoulders to show his appreciation before Jurskis "popped the question." Talk about putting on a show!
But why exactly did these two students choose this Republican candidate's rally to demonstrate their imaginative act of commitment? "It's way more ethical to have two people of the same gender get married than have two college sophomores tie the knot," said Peach in response to her creative form of political protest. According to the student, the engagement was a "brief demonstration of values and activism" used to call out Cruz's "hypocritical stance on marriage." Surprisingly, the daring duo's bold display of protest was "spur of the moment," reports the Boston Globe. Peach, who was waiting in line for a photo with the Republican man-of-the-hour, was hit with the sudden thought before pulling her fake fiancé aside to inform him of the performance. Peach's other half then asked Cruz for his help in the proposal who quickly congratulated the two students on their forever moment. "He gave us the biggest hug I think I have ever received in my entire life," said Jurskis.
Even though Peach admitted that she felt slightly guilty for the proposal performance, the daring duo both agreed that they would rather have Cruz win the Republican race than the party's other front-runner, Donald Trump. "I'm ok with Cruz being the Republican guy, after meeting and seeing the rest of the candidates," said Jurskis. We can't imagine what this twosome's next form of meaningful public display will be!
