Here's Exactly How Much Americans Are Said to Be Spending on Valentine's Day This Year

We know money can't buy love, but it certainly sounds like everyone tries on Valentine's Day! Sure, February 14 is a day to remind your fabulous fiancé or sweetheart of a spouse just how much you adore them, but apparently most of America hasn't gotten the memo that love doesn't necessarily have to cost a thing. We just got the number on exactly how much Americans are slated to spend this Valentine's Day and the sheer sticker shock will send an arrow right through poor Cupid's heart.

By the looks of it, lovebirds are flying toward bankruptcy this February. The financial website Wallethub estimates that Americans as a whole will be spending $19.7 billion on Valentine's Day this year. Yup, $19.7 billion. That breaks down to each person planning to celebrate the holiday shelling out $146 for their sweetheart. Flowers and heart-shaped boxes of chocolate really add up, don't they?

Wallethub further broke down the V-Day numbers and found out that couples planning a romantic night-out (candlelit dinner, anyone?) are expected to spend $87 on their meal, adding up to a $4.5 billion restaurant bill. Meanwhile, 18% of twosomes are planning Valentine's Day weekend getaways and are estimated to be spending an average of $286 on their mini-moons — those lucky lovebirds!

As for the old V-Day standbys (flowers and candy are classics for a reason, after all), we're in for some more shocking estimates. Florists are said to be churning out 250 million roses this February, making the half dozen in your bridal bouquet seem like child's play! $1.99 billion will be sent on V-Day blooms and we'll be indulging in $1.76 billion worth of chocolate. Count us in!

And let's not forget about all that bling-bling! $4.45 billion will be our jewelry receipt this year, with some of those baubles having an extra special purpose. 14 million proposals are planned for the uber-romantic holiday. Just think of all the engagement ring selfies come February 15!
