An '80s prom queen and Justin Bieber walk into a Halloween party... That's not the opener of a joke, but instead exactly how Jenn and Tom met back in 2010. While she doesn't think he's got the Bieb's moves, Tom's British accent may be what drew her to him in the first place! Whatever it was that caused a spark, the two became an item. On May 27, 2013, the couple took a walk along the beach in Del Mar, California, just as they did every other weekend. "He started pulling me toward this beautiful oceanfront house, and as we got closer I saw rose petals, candles, a table with champagne, and a delicious brunch spread," Jenn remembers. It turned out that Tom had rented the house, set up a proposal, and had Jenn's family hidden upstairs, taking pictures of the whole thing.
Maui has become a second home for Jenn and her family, where they've vacationed since she was a baby. "My brother and sister both got married there, so picking the island was easy," she says. She even picked the same venue where her sister said "I do" in 2009, Merriman's Kapalua. "Between the ambiance, the food, and the view, we couldn't ask for anything more," says Jenn. With guests traveling from far and wide, the couple planned a week full of activities, capped off with a vintage-inspired wedding on August 9, 2014. And the stunning photos by Tamiz Photography? They'll transport you straight to Hawaii.
For a wedding that combined ocean views with a vintage vibe, Jenn chose an airy chiffon mermaid gown by Anne Barge. "I felt so much pressure while dress shopping to find something, and it was hard when everyone in the store oohed and aahed over a dress I hated," she says. So her advice to future brides? "Speak up! You're the one who gets to wear the dress down the aisle!"
Crystal-embellished Badgley Mischka pumps matched the vintage-style beaded belt, while Jenn's cathedral-length veil was perfect for catching an ocean breeze. The bride's bouquet combined white, cream, and blush blooms, including garden roses, lisianthus, and ranunculus, accented with the soft green of dusty miller.
Jenn's bridesmaids looked appropriately beachy in aqua Donna Morgan dresses. Their pink bouquets popped against the sea glass hue.
Tom wore a dark gray suit, complete with a vest and a light gray tie. His groomsmen contrasted in light gray, with striped gray ties that matched Tom's outfit.
"We put together most of our ceremony décor in San Diego and shipped it to Maui," says Jenn of the DIY elements. "We found the arbor at an antique store in Ocean Beach, and stumbled upon a set of antique pale pink doors. We punched out the glass panes, then sent the doors over to set up at the start of the aisle."
The vintage altar was decorated with hydrangeas, roses and ranunculus in shades of white and pink. A basket of parasols was set out for guests to shade themselves from the Hawaiian sun.
Jenn's niece, at almost a year old, served as flower girl with a little help from the ring bearers, who pulled her down the aisle in a wagon ahead of the bride and her father.
"We wrote our own vows," says the bride. "They were short, simple, and so meaningful."
Every wedding comes with weather risks, but the forecast around Jenn and Tom's big day had the potential to cancel the whole event. "There was a chance of a double hurricane hitting Maui the weekend of our wedding, so we had to have the dreaded conversation with our planner about whether to cancel our wedding and move it to the following day if the weather cleared up," she says. "Guests were worried about getting to the island, and we had no idea if there would even be power, so we added battery-powered lighting. Thankfully, it turned into light rain and wind the day before, and the weather on our wedding day was just about perfect."
The couple's reception space featured tables topped with champagne-hued lace linens that were decorated with antique bottles, mercury glass, and vases full of blush and cream blooms.
The bottles were the perfect aqua hue to match their beachy vibe, and antique frames held chalkboard signs displaying each table's name. "We named the tables after fun British phrases!" says Jenn.
Guests dined on lobster BLTs and crab cakes before the surf-and-turf meal and sipped on a Mai Tai topped with lilikoi foam.
The newlyweds' first dance started out to Ed Sheeran's "Kiss Me," then quickly changed to Justin Timberlake's "Take Back the Night" as the couple broke into a choreographed Latin dance routine. "I've been a dancer all my life, and convinced Tom to spend six months with a choreographer to put together a number to surprise our guests!" says Jenn.
Since Tom's family lives in the UK, he doesn't get to see his mom very often. "He loved getting to have a mother-son dance with her," says Jenn. "It was such a memorable moment."
The couple stayed in Hawaii for their honeymoon, heading to the St. Regis in Kauai. Even though wedding planning was stressful at times, Jenn says to enjoy every moment of it. "I really missed browsing Pinterest and our DIY projects once it was over."
