Ten years after Ashley and Robert graduated from the same high school, they met up again at a mutual friend's concert, and sparks they hadn't noticed when they first met in junior high school suddenly flew. The pair dated for two years before, on July 4, 2014, Robert proposed as the pair watched the Macy's Firework Show over the water from a Brooklyn hotel.
With two large families and a 250-person guest list, the couple knew they'd need a venue that could accommodate a big group for their August 9, 2015, wedding. They found just the place, the Inn at New Hyde Park, just ten minutes from their home. "We fell in love with it the moment we walked into the ballroom," says Ashley. The couple's timeless celebration featured an ivory and black color scheme, two wedding dresses, and the groom's son serving as ring bearer. Ashley started the day in a structured Truly Zac Posen gown, with geometric seaming and a cascading train. "I'd fallen in love with a dress I couldn't find, and my mother and mother-in-law convinced me to go to David's Bridal. I'm so glad I did, and I fell in love with this fit-and-flare gown." A few months later, she was having second thoughts and headed to Glamour's Closet, a boutique that offers designer gowns at discounted prices, where she found a hand-beaded Martina Liana gown that she changed into for the reception.
To complement the crisp, modern color scheme, Ashley carried a bouquet of red roses with crystals in the center of each bloom. Her bridesmaids looked chic in strapless black gowns.
Robert wore a black tux, while his groomsmen wore ivory dinner jackets to pop against the bridesmaids' black dresses. The groom's son wore a black tuxedo to match his father as he walked down the aisle as ring bearer.
"I wanted to find a gown that would flatter all nine of my bridesmaids, and the tulle Adrianna Papell dresses were just the thing. My maid of honor wore a sleeveless beaded mermaid gown, also in black, to stand out from the crowd," says the bride.
Ashley's father walked her down the outdoor aisle to a wrought-iron gazebo on the Inn's lawn where she and Robert would exchange vows.
"We wrote our own vows," says Ashley, who dedicated a section of her words to Robert's son.
Inside the ballroom, tables were topped with ivory damask linens and arrangements of lush white hydrangeas. The elegant bar served a variety of wines, as well as a signature rum punch (a nod to Robert's Caribbean heritage) and a vanilla vodka and coconut rum martini.
Ashley changed into her beaded Martina Liana gown just before she and Robert made their grand entrance into the reception. The newlyweds shared their first dance to John Legend's "You and I." "I'm the same height as Robert, but I really wanted to wear heels for our wedding, so we struck a compromise," says Ashley. "I wore kitten heels to the reception, then when I changed my dress, I put on my Dior sandals!"
The couple's four-tiered cake featured strawberry and whipped cream layers and crystals wrapped around the layers.
Ashley's advice is to remember the purpose of your wedding day. "You're joining two hearts as one, so don't sweat the small stuff and absorb every moment!"
