Hannah Chung and Gene Hur first met in September 2001 at orchestra rehearsal while he was attending Pamona College and she was an undergrad at Claremont McKenna College. Although they were friendly for years, the two didn't start dating until March 2013 when Facebook brought them back together. Just over a year later, in August 2014, Gene proposed at Cannon Beach, Oregon, after a seaside picnic.
The two wanted a simple and relaxed celebration, and decided to tie the knot at California's Villa at San Juan Capistrano on March 22, 2015. "We loved their go-to vendors and found their staff professional, easy to work with, and the property is so photogenic," Hannah says. With the help of Michelle Tkach, the in-house planner at the Villa, Hannah and Gene planned a spring-inspired celebration with plenty of flowering details. Unlike most brides, Hannah's wedding dress was the only one she ever tried on. She worked with a designer at Shin Bu Bridal to create a custom silk dupioni gown. "We only looked at pictures online and discussed what I liked and disliked," the bride says. The final result was a stunning off the shoulder A-line gown that fit Hannah like a glove.
The bride's hair was swept up into a soft bun and she accessorized with a pair of drop earrings and an understated bracelet. Her bouquet complemented her simple and relaxed wedding aesthetic. She chose a combination of garden roses, ranunculus, stock, and dusty miller in shades of white, peach, and green.
Gene chose a charcoal gray suit from Zegna. He accessorized with a blue tie and green-and-white boutonniere.
The couple's bridal party looked equally stylish in mismatched attire. Hannah's bridesmaids chose their own knee-length blue dresses. "I sent them pictures of ensembles I liked and asked them wear any material ranging from blue to gray, but no jersey," she says. Their three fashion-forward frocks coordinated perfectly with Gene's three groomsmen, who were asked to dress in dark gray suits with formal blue bowties.
The ceremony was held in an outdoor courtyard where chairs were arranged atop a stone patio. The aisle was lined with glass vases filled with fresh white blooms and greenery. At the front of the courtyard, a lush floral garland, which included garden roses, hydrangeas, and eucalyptus, framed a doorway that served as an altar.
Hannah's father walked her down the aisle before the couple exchanged traditional vows. Once their officiant, who just so happened to be the groom's brother-in-law, pronounced them husband and wife, Hannah and Gene recessed to acoustic guitar music that was recorded by their DJ.
The couple transformed an antique door into their escort card display, with each individual pane of glass representing a specific table.
As guests sipped the couple's two signature drinks during cocktail hour — his, a Moscow mule and hers, a bellini — the courtyard was transformed for the reception.
Round tables were decorated with arrangements of pink, white, and green blooms, including roses, hydrangeas, succulents, and wax flower. Wooden table numbers and mixed glass votives completed the décor.
A three-tiered white wedding cake from Sweet & Saucy Shop was served for dessert. Flavors included chocolate ganache cake with Oreo frosting and classic strawberry cake.
Hannah and Gene enjoyed a mini-moon along the California coast immediately following their wedding and then flew to Bora Bora in September for their official honeymoon. "Don't have your heart set on anything and just be open to options," Hannah advises other couples planning their own wedding.
