How to Ask for Privacy on the Morning of Your Wedding

The morning of your wedding is a roller coaster, as timelines and to-do lists collide with all sorts of emotions. It's the perfect time to surround yourself with your support system, whether it's your bridesmaids, your sister, or just your mom. The last thing you need is extra stress, so what's a bride to do if a member of her entourage isn't the calming spirit she'd hoped for? Our etiquette experts walk us through a simple solution.

Celebrating the morning of your wedding with your closest friends and family members is something brides dream of, from sipping mimosas while they get their hair done to having their mom help them into their wedding dress. But while the photos show a few brief moments full of lots of smiles, there's much more to be done to stay on-schedule — not to mention all the things you might be feeling while the moments tick by. So whether it's a friend who means well but just can't stop asking if you're excited, or you're simply overwhelmed and want a little quiet, here's how to speak up.

It might be hard to imagine asking someone you care about to leave on such a monumental day, but there's no need to give too much of an explanation. "It's your big day, so you can simply say 'If you would please excuse me, I want to spend a few moments alone with my family or 'I'd like a few moments to get my thoughts together alone while I finish getting ready,'" says etiquette expert Diane Gottsman, owner of The Protocol School of Texas. "This should give a hint that you'd like them to leave, or at least give you an easy out to step into another room and close the door."

If all else fails, ask your wedding planner, mother, or a trusted friend to kindly encourage the source of stress to give you a few minutes of much-needed privacy.
