A study just published in Social Psychological and Personality Science flies in the face of popular wisdom regarding how often couples should be sleeping together. Based on surveys from more than 30,000 Americans, researchers from the University of Toronto concluded that "the more, the better" may be the wrong attitude to take toward sex.
While more time in the bedroom may make for happier couples up to a certain point, "sex is no longer associated with well-being at a frequency of more than once a week," the authors write, regardless of someone's age or sex or how long they've been in a relationship.
Frequency of sex also wasn't related to well-being for single people, likely because the happiness couples gain from having more sex is due to increased relationship satisfaction. The researchers also suggest that since once a week is about the average frequency with which couples sleep together; people who keep up this pattern are satisfied because they feel their relationship is normal and healthy.
Of course, these findings alone aren't reason enough to cut back if you're getting busy more than once a week. Whether you're single or in a relationship, there's no harm associated with frequent lovemaking, so if that's what works for you, keep at it. However, if you have more sex than you're up for when you're tired or stressed because you suspect your relationship will suffer otherwise, the pressure's officially off.
