Kate and Shawn first met in May of 2010, and both admit that they weren't looking for a relationship. Since both had recently gotten out of serious relationships, they pledged to be friends, have a good time, and keep each other single for a few months. But, as Kate says, fate had other plans, and when Shawn finally convinced her to go on a real date just a few months later, she knew their incredible friendship had developed into so much more. A year and a half later, Shawn surprised Kate with a trip to Bali for her birthday. There, just before a private dinner in a forest full of monkeys, he got down on one knee. "I don't even remember what he said," she admits. "I just remember saying yes!"
The couple started planning right away and booked Stone Manor Estate in Malibu, California, (the same spot where they had their first date!) for their August 10, 2013, nuptials. They worked with planner Cassandra Santor to dream up an elegant, garden-inspired celebration with plenty of pink dé, as captured by Picotte Weddings.
After months of searching for her dream invite with no luck, Kate decided to make her own. She tackled the project — which, she admits, was much bigger than she imagined! — and hand-selected every detail of the suite, from the stamped return address to the paper color and envelopes.
The bride fell so hard for her lace Marchesa gown that she was willing to go way over her budget to have it. "Every time I imagined saying 'I do,' I was in this dress," she says. She accessorized her dream cap-sleeved gown with rose gold drop earrings, a cathedral length veil, and rose gold heels.
Kate carried a lush bouquet of peonies in shades of pink.
The groom looked chic in a custom midnight blue tux from Fitwell Custom Clothes in Los Angeles. He accessorized his look with a pop of color: hot pink socks!
For the ceremony, Kate worked with Cassandra Santor to create a wooden altar covered in peonies and greenery. "This location was gorgeous and had an amazing view," she says. "My florist knew exactly what I wanted and brought every idea to life."
After the bride walked down the aisle to The Beatles' "Here Comes The Sun," the couple exchanged vows they'd written themselves. "We both wrote our own, but kept everything very short because we didn't want our guests to sit through a long ceremony in the heat," she says.
Following the ceremony, guests moved the party to a cozy stone patio, where wooden farm tables were dressed with low arrangements of pink garden roses, dahlias, and peonies.
Kate and Shawn cut into their vegan three-layer wedding cake that was filled with layers of coconut vanilla and chocolate cake.
At the end of the night, the party-going couple ditched their limo and hopped on the shuttle bus with the friends. Then, they all headed to the Bungalow in Santa Monica, where the couple bought table service to enjoy with loved ones. "We met at a club so it was the only fitting way to end the night!" laughs the bride.
