Former Dancing with the Stars pros Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgaroyd first met in 2009 and have since danced their way into each other's hearts. And now the couple is finally spilling on their full love story — and, according to Murgaroyd, it definitely was not love at first sight.

"I thought he was arrogant," Murgatroyd says in the current issue of People. "Okay, that's a defense mechanism. I think she was in love with me at first sight and just doesn't want to admit it," Chmerkovskiy said back to his bride-to-be. The two first met when they were cast in the Broadway production Burn the Floor and quickly built a friendship during the show's run.

"I learned to like him because I found out he wasn't that arrogant," admits Murgatroyd. "He was really generous to the entire cast, and our friendship grew and grew." Although they were fast friends their romance took a bit longer to build. Murgatroyd admitted that there was always a strong attraction between the two but the timing wasn't right. Chmerkovskiy was engaged to fellow DWTS pro Karina Smirnoff while Murgaroyd was dating future DWTS costar Damien Whitewood.

Come 2012 the two were single and their romantic relationship really started to blossom. Well... until Chmerovskiy broke things off after less than a year of dating. "My heart was broken," Murgatroyd told People. "But when we were driving to the airport after the breakup talk, he literally asked me why I was taking all my bags and clothes back. I was like, 'We just broke up. Why would I leave anything behind?' That's when I knew it wasn't really over for forever."

The duo's breakup only lasted three months and on December 5 Chmerkovskiy popped the question in Miami. "I think it's awesome we have a massive history," says Chmerkovskiy, 35. "It'll make a great story to tell our kids one day." The two's history seems to hit all the major plot points of our favorite romantic comedies — there's even a surprise public proposal!

Chmerkovskiy dropped to one knee in the middle of Sway: A Dance Trilogy, which both stars are dancing in, and proposed in front of their fellow castmates and a stunned crowd. Luckily for everyone the sweet moment was caught on tape in a video we've practically been watching on repeat. We cannot wait to see how the rest of this love story plays out and are anxiously awaiting more wedding details.
