The traditional black smoky eye is a bridal beauty favorite. But it's even better when you add a little color: "Black can look harsh on your big day," says celebrity makeup artist Kristofer
. "Playing with soft color will enhance your eyes without overpowering them." Here, our three favorite ways to go beyond the black.

Rose Gold
This warm metallic works on all skin tones and eye colors. Prep by applying cream concealer all over your eyelids so your makeup stays in place. (This first step goes for all three of these looks, FYI!) Then smooth a cream or powder rose-gold shadow across your lids, and use an eyeliner brush to blend a matte brown shadow along your lower lash lines. "This helps accentuate your eyes in photos," says Buckle.

Try these: Armani Eyes to Kill Intense Eyeshadow in Rock Sand ($34); CoverGirl Bombshell Shineshadow in Copper Fling ($7.99); Clé de Peau Beauté Ombre Satin Eye Color in Brown Opal, ($45)

Amazing on olive and dark complexions, a deep purple "brings out the golden tones in brown eyes and illuminates green ones," says Buckle. Apply a plum shadow along the upper lash lines, blending it up and out. Trace a matching eyeliner pencil all along your upper lashes and just at the corners below the eyes. Finish by patting a shimmery cream-colored shadow at the inner corners.

Try these: Chanel Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Cassis ($32); Dolce & Gabbana Perfect Mono in Dahlia ($36); Bobbi Brown Shimmer Wash Eye Shadow in Bone ($24)

Dusty Blue
This pale shade looks gorge on fair skin — especially with blue or brown eyes. Brush a matte dusty-blue shadow across your lids, up to the creases and down to the lower outside corners, then blend to soften. Apply a matte nude shadow from the crease up to your brow bone so that it slightly overlaps with the blue. Finish by smudging a deep-blue liner along the upper lash lines.

Try these: Laura Mercier Matte Eye Colour in Blue Suede ($24); L'Oréal Infallible Eye Shadow in Endless Pearl ($7.95); Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Eye Pencil in Sapphire ($23)
