Inviting an ex-boyfriend to your wedding can stir up unnecessary emotions between you and your new hubby. Our experts are here to help you navigate this tricky decision.
If there ever were a gray area, this is definitely a big one, and there are multiple factors to consider before inviting an ex boyfriend to your wedding. Even if you are friends now, whether you invite him to your wedding depends on what your relationship was like while you dated. There's a big difference between a weeklong fling that turned into years of friendship and a long-term boyfriend you considered marrying. That being said, remind yourself that your fiancé may not see the distinction and just feel uncomfortable with any blast from you past attending the wedding. If you're doubting it, error on the side of caution and don't invite your ex boyfriend. Even if he's disappointed, he should be able to understand.
If his friendship is truly important in your life and you want him there to witness your happiness, you should think long and hard about the message you're sending to your fiancé, who probably takes his role as 'most important man in your life' very seriously. Before popping that invitation in the mail, have a conversation with him so that he can weigh in on the subject, and then spend some time considering his feelings. And should you jointly choose to invite that former flame, be prepared to dodge some questions if he shows up (particularly from a new mother-in-law, hint hint). As long as you and your husband are on the same page about your decision, no one else's opinion should matter.
